Buffalo Sabres' Record Breaking Road Performance Against the West in 2022-23
Buffalo Sabres entered the 2022-23 season as the youngest team in hockey, and young teams traditionally struggle on the road. Or so we thought. Buffalo Sabres' road record alone was nothing short of spectacular. They not only finished with an excellent 25-13-3 in opposing arenas; they also almost established a historic record for points scored on the road.
Young teams usually play better at home, when they have their own fans cheering for them. But the Blue and Gold were different; so much so that they finished a remarkable 12-2-2 in Western Conference arenas, good for 26 points and almost half of their total points in all road games.
The Sabres foreshadowed how good they would be on Western Conference trips with a frustrating win over the high-octane Edmonton Oilers in what was likely goaltender Eric Comrie's best performance of the season. And it didn't end there, with the Sabres scoring two more big wins over the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks before finally falling to the Seattle Kraken - a team they still haven't beaten.
Buffalo didn't play in a Western Conference arena again until facing the Colorado Avalanche on December 15, winning 4-2, before ending the trip with victories over the Vegas Golden Knights and Arizona Coyotes. Buffalo struggled to make anything happen in early January, but a trip to Nashville resulted in a 5-3 win, which ultimately helped the Sabres get back on track. However, they lost their next road game in painful fashion to the Chicago Blackhawks in overtime, a team they defeated on the road the previous season in what was one of the team's most bizarre winning goals in history.
After a two-game stint at the KeyBank Center that saw the Blue and Gold win both matchups, they ended January on the road with three consecutive victories over the Dallas Stars, St. Louis Blues, and Winnipeg Jets, before falling in a shootout to the Minnesota Wild.
Buffalo saw their last three road games in the West happen in February, right after the All-Star break. Unfortunately, they lost only their second game in regulation to the Los Angeles Kings, although they defeated the Anaheim Ducks and San Jose Sharks to complete their passage of 12-2-2 in the west in 2022-23.
