I've compiled a reading list of my favourite history books via the Amazon influencer program. If you do choose to purchase any of these incredible sources of information then Amazon will send me a tiny fraction of the earnings (as long as you do it through the link) (this means more and better content in the future) I'll keep adding to and updating the list as time goes on:-

I try to use copyright free images at all times. However if I have used any of your artwork or maps then please don't hesitate to contact me and I’ll be more than happy to give the appropriate credit.

Phew. 3 and a half hours long. 3 years in the making. 30 locations visited. 100 sources used. 15 hours upload time. Delighted to finally have this out there. I’ll sort out a detailed bibliography and list of sources I used once I have recovered my mind a little... cheers all. Don’t forget to like and comment if you enjoyed this vid as it helps the algorithm to make it worthwhile and makes more projects like this one possible in the future. If you enjoyed it consider subscribing for 100+ other vids I’ve already made plus tons more epics in the future. Hopefully soon I should be able to travel overseas again and widen the focus out a bit from Britain once again!! Cheers for watching. Catch y’all next time.

Insane we're in an era where you can get 3 hours of high quality content with exactly what is described, instead of WW2 and hitler marathons on the history channel every week

I studied History, Archaeology, Celtic Civilisation and Classical Civilisation at the University of Glasgow, with a lot of focus on the transitions from Late Antiquity through to the High Middle Ages, and did a course that covered the Welsh poetry covered here, and several on the Anglo-Saxon world. all under some of the leading scholars in these fields.

I can say with some authority then, that this is a colossal work for one person to achieve. Even knitting these threads together into a coherent written narrative would be a massive challenge, let alone single-handedly producing a 3 and a half hour film that even someone with a casual interest could enjoy.. The scale and scope of such a tale is enormous and exceptionally difficult to understand, and yet you have made it easily digestible.

I will recommend this video as a starting point for anyone wishing to understand the "Dark Ages", and indeed for any scholar of the period to enjoy. Wonderful, wonderful piece of work. Bravo!

Dude, I must say, as a fellow historian, this was amazingly well done! BBC should be paying you to produce documentaries.

This documentary is indescribably good. Absolutely towering. Incredible. What an achievement.

When Simon Schama's 'History of Britain' series was released on the BBC at the start of the Millennium it was hailed as a major TV event. In his series he goes from the fall of Roman Britain to the age of Alfred the Great in about two minutes.

Now, for free, around 20 years later we can watch a documentary that's over three hours long just about that same era that Schama brushed over in a few short paragraphs. That's truly amazing. Thanks for your work.

Content like this is why I don't pay for a TV service anymore. I'll hit up your patreon in the next few days.

I'm British, my wife is American (I went over to the US and pillaged) and we now live in England. She's not academic in nature, but has fallen in love with the history of the British Isles after I've taken her to a few places. The eye opener for her was a tour of Ely Cathedral and Castle Rising in the South East.

Can't wait to show her this.

Bro this is actually insane, as somebody who loves old history like this, Thanks to this video I've learned more about England in this period then ever before. Thank you for this video

It took this man 3 years to make this documentary and 446 people have the nerve to thumb it down. Some people just don't understand. smh

Simply brilliant! Cinematography, editing and narration are some of the best out there. Thank you for taking so much time to bring us a near perfect documentary. 👏🏻

Top quality YouTube content like this does not come along often. When it does it reminds me of how lucky we are to have creators such as yourself producing work that far surpasses anything a major TV network can offer in the historical documentary field.

I'd happily pay my BBC licence fee if they were capable of providing me with content like this, but they haven't even come close to making anything on the same level as this masterpiece in recent years.

Thank you for all your hard work and effort in keeping us informed and entertained, it really is very much appreciated.

I sit here a humble American (inorite), but have returned to this specific documentary a dozen times since it came out. The mythos, the presentation, the era, the wonder, the speculation, the imagining, the simple truth that entire worlds (however small) can be lost or altered by the stroke of a pen is somewhat maddening & riveting. It teeters on defiance of the imagination. Yet there so equally defiant stand the ruins and records.

I'd shake your hand and buy a sturdy round on your part, if ever we met. This is top tier storytelling on behalf of humanity.

Thank you for what you do.

"He wasn't a historian, nor was he particularly concerned with accuracy" I thought my lecturer was criticizing me, but she was just comparing me to Gildas. So honoured.

This. Was. FANTASTIC.

You took one of the most difficult periods in western history - one where historians know so little - and made a THREE HOUR documentary out of it. You taught me *everything*. I seriously barely knew *any* of this - and I spent a huge part of my history major on emphasizing in Medieval Studies. I took at least one course on Britain in Late Antiquity/Early Middle Ages, attended countless lectures, and read who knows how many books, and you blinded me with an entire course (or more) of material that was entirely new to me.

What you set out to do with this documentary was a superhuman effort, and you did it with flawless style. <3 You have a new fan.

Thank you for your very educational and enlightening videos. I’m American, but I always learn a bit more about my English, Irish, and Scottish ancestors from the topics you cover. Because of this I will visit these very historical locations in the future.

Brilliant documentary, well written and narrated, not a period of history I knew much about. Loved the editing too with aerial footage. Great to see you have 1 million subscribers . Well earned, many thanks
