Inside Berdoulat: A History-Filled 18th-Century Shop & House | Design Notes

Patrick & Neri Williams welcome us into their shop & home, based in the World Heritage Site of Bath, England. The interior design duo have transformed a truly unique space in the heart of Bath, which sees Georgian, Regency and Victorian architecture converge. With a deep respect for the history and soul of the building, they have sensitively renovated the Grade II-listed space.

“In 1890, three very eccentric Victorians joined forces,” explains Patrick as he stands in the front-of-house shop. “What they did with the building was to completely reformat the space. All of the internal walls at ground and first-floor were removed, as was the ceiling to create this fantastic double-heighted space.” Watch the full episode of Design Notes with Patrick & Neri Williams and tour Berdoulat in Bath.

what a shock to hear the name Cater and wine merchant together around a minute 45. My great-great grandmother's last name was Cater and I believe her father's family were in the wine trade. I have no idea if Richard Cater was a relative, but I can't help but assume so! So cool to be touched so closely by history, while watching this video of a beautiful space so far away from where I live, on the west coast of North America.

Patrick and Neri own, work and live in a whimsical and magical space with a very rich history that they are so aware of. I love that because there are a lot of people who don't think of who and what came before us. I also love their tribute to Patrick's late mother on the wording of the bookcase. I am so touched by seeing the video. Patrick and Neri used to have one of the most beautifulest b&bs in whole Somerset (my opinion), with the same name, Berdoulat. I am still very sad, they closed it, but so lucky to “watch” from them. All the best!
