To enable PURE DAC mode... You hold down the power/sel button WHILE turning on the main power switch in back. It brings up a startup menu which lets you change a bunch of stuff without the remote, including setting it to DAC/Pre modes.

As others already said in the comments. Turn the D90 off on the back. Press and hold the on/off button on the front while turning it on with the back switch, Than you get a menu with all the settings which you can navigate with the up and down buttons and confirm with the on/off button.
In this menu you can choose all options you can choose with the remote control + extra options like DAC/preamp mode etc. I have put in in DAC only mode now and it works like a charm.
Actually it is all written in the manual starting from column 6 (including all the menu options you can choose). I have it in front of me :)

Have you tried out the German Lake People G111 headphone amp? Some have said the micro dynamics (sound after the bug hit) it provides has more detail than the Toppings 90D?

I have the D70 paired with the THX 789 (connected with XLR) and everything sounds natural, wider and cleaner. It's almost like having the benefits of a tube amp but with less noise/distortion.

Shopping for balanced DAC with BT, looking at this and the upcoming Gustard A18. The A18 may kill the D90 dead with same (better?) specs at $150 less? It has no optical in though but I don't really need it. It does have linear power supply built in. So I don't see any reason to choose D90 over A18? (Other than you really need a DAC ASAP or really need the optical in).

How does the Khadas Tone Board compare just in sound quality? Obviously it's just a PCB board with 0 functionality, but it's so cheap that many people want to buy one for multiple rooms or as a backup DAC for different server devices, etc. How does the Khadas Tone Board compare to Toppings new high end dacs?

I have the D70, do these units even get firmware updates? I dont see anything in the actual Topping driver software. Its pretty basic stuff.
All the problems zeoz has is negated by using it in DAC mode.
Zeos you should ivestigate I2S and let us know wtf its for.

Question about how to implement a DAC:

I used to have a Marantz AV8801 for my music/movie home theater setup. And music sounded AMAZING on it.

I had to upgrade to a 4K receiver because I bought a new Sony 4K OLED and I didn’t want to spend a ton of money on a new high-end Marantz pre-pro. So I bought a cheaper SlimLine Marantz that does Dolby Vision/4K, etc...

Needless to say, music is a few steps down in quality vs the AV8801.

Will a DAC like the topping help me improve sound? How do I implement it?

I have 2.1 channel setup, powered by an Emotiva stereo amplifier connected to the Marantz 1609 slimline. And I mostly use Apple Airplay to stream UltraHD music from Amazon Music.

Thanks for review. I like sound presentation of my D70 and hope D90 has similar full-bodied timbres and overall musicality, but with improved dynamics and bass reproduction.
BTW topping has manual with all information about functionality on their website.
