Yes, he noticed the mold prevented the bacteria from growing, but he ended up passing the idea off to a group in a lab to refine and develop the actual antibiotic. I feel like this gets oversold. Actually, originally nobody was interested in it. Once an Oxford lab did take interest, they couldn't refine it. It wasn't until the early 40s that a department of agriculture lab in Illinois actually managed to make it into a medication that worked AND could be manufactured realistically. 18 years after Fleming's chance findings.
