Legend has it that Gresley experimented in the dining room at his home to find the smallest width of passageway.

On a documentary his daughter/granddaughter (can't remember which)

She walked in on Gresley shimmying his way between the wall and some chairs he had set up in a line (he was a bit...big at the time)

When he got to the end he is quoted as saying "if I can make it through this space my crews can"

I think this is the first major change to steam locomotive design I’ve seen that _didn’t_ utterly fail.

Honestly, it sounds like Gresley's patent was a utility patent rather than a design patent if other lines had legal issues with making their own.

While not as famous, in 1912 a Queensland Government Railways A12's Tender locomotive was modified with a 'corridor' tender to enable the fireman to walk back along the train to sell and check tickets for the Ayr Tramway.

I remember c.1970 4472 was on display in the museum at Paignton, and I was able to walk through the corridor tender. I remember it was a tight fit, even for an 11 year old...!

I love this video! I like the map showing The Flying Scotsman's route from London to Edinburgh and how the replacement crew could walk through the corridor tender, into the cab and take over while the original crew could rest

How did I not know about this? I had heard of corridor tenders for years but never knew it was like this!

you know, this would make a great action movie climax.

I knew of this corridor but only because I have built a wooden model kit of 'The Flying Scotsman' complete with tender and it has the corridor included in the design of the kit. Ingenious idea

The LNER only had 22 corridor tenders?

I'm pretty sure I've been through a corridor tender - possibly aged 10 at the time in the 1970s.

I actually saw one of these a few months ago. I was at the East Lancashire Railway where the had the LNER A 4 Union of South Africa and the LNER A 3 Flying Scotsman running. The A 4 had the corridor tender. Unfortunately the A 4 was going out of service as she needed a major refit and there are not the funds to carry it out.

... the more I hear about Gresley the more I'm like. "Wtf are you like the Steve Jobs of the train era?"

This channel never fails to teach me things about trains I had no idea about and in an entertaining way :)
I also appreciate the background it reminds me of Thomas and I enjoy the nostalgia

Kind of reminds me of the Galaxy Express 999, the conductor also has the job of driving the locomotive, not just his conductor duties, and there was a hallway through the tender to the cab, but because space trains don't burn combustion fuels, the hall was larger and put down the middle of the tender.
