Lincoln was a genius, when he issued the emancipation proclamation, it was entirely conditional, it said all slaves held within southern, rebellious states, would if those states didn’t lay down their arms and return to the Union by a specific date, be freed. The Confederates had the opportunity to keep slavery if they rejoined the Union before then but they missed it! The emancipation proclamation was basically an ultimatum, So the argument that Lincoln just wanted to take away the south’s slaves doesn’t hold up, because he was smart enough to make it’s continued existence or abolition conditional upon the South’s own actions. By their obstinate refusal, the south managed to guarantee it’s abolition. 😂
