Fun facts: things inside a violin edition!

A lot of old instruments have lint balls in them, and a lot of players specifically request they be put back in the instrument if a repair includes taking the top off. Why they do this, I have no idea! Superstition, perhaps?

Some players (fiddle players, usually) put rattlesnake rattles in their instruments! Apparently its for good luck but mostly I think it just gives us luthiers a heart attack.

And last but not least, this wasnt put there intentionally (idk how you would even do that) but my shop has found a wasp nest inside of a violin before! We took the top off because it was buzzing and some of the top crack repairs had failed, and boom! Wasp nest. Funnily enough, it wasnt buzzing because of the wasp nest, but bc of the aforementioned cracks and some lining that was loose. It had been left in a garage for a few years so that's where the nest came from.
