Please read the book. It's a masterpiece. This movie (and the book) is not about a psychopath (in the classic sense) or someone who likes to kill women. It's about someone born with an extraordinary sense of smell surpassing even the abilities of dogs. He instinctively understands the enormous and subconscious effect smell has on people - and learns the craft of perfume making. Eventually he starts to make perfume from human beings, a process that does not require the person the be killed. But since all people around him are ignoring or condescending him (since he has no human smell of his own) he starts killing. In the end he aims for the one ultimate smell that makes everyone love him like a God. And boy ... did he succeed.
