'G20 Is A Big Moment For India Despite Headwinds'

NEW DELHI: Is the G20 summit India's moment in the sun? Will the absence of Russia's Putin and China's Xi Jinping take away from the event? What if there's no consensus document, will it reflect on India?

These are some of the questions put to Ambassador Pankaj Saran, former deputy national security adviser and currently head of the Natstrat think tank. In his view, while Putin is not attending for reasons entirely to do with his invasion of Ukraine last year, Xi's reasons are purely bilateral, not wanting to be at an event where the focus could be on an adversary nation.

Saran believes it may also be too early to rule out a consensus given that leaders like President Joe Biden and others have invested in the relationship with India for various reasons. India is seen as a bright spot in the world economy with reforms in infrastructure and investment drawing international capital.

India's push to bring in the African Union is politically a good move, he argues, even though the continent may not be a major economic player.
