In the pre-modern era, few have trekked as extensively as the 14th century explorer ibn Battuta. The adventurous Moroccan set out on a 3 decade long expedition that saw him make his way across the span of Asia, various parts of sub-Saharan Africa and throughout the Mediterranean. In this video we will re-visit his account of travelling to the Mongol Golden Horde in the Crimea to meet the powerful Ozbeg Khan.

Some of the comments talk about how history like this isn’t being taught in schools. I was raised in the Northern US and I learned quite a bit about Islamic culture, especially it’s influence on the Spanish language. My Spanish teacher spoke about this often. Also, the influence that Islamic culture had on mathematics and science was taught extensively when I was in school. It all depends on where you raised. It’s sad that not everyone has been taught this. I’m learning even more from this channel.

This is fascinating history...
One thing in the USA we do NOT learn about is anything to do with Muslim history. Unless it has to do with religious fanaticism or wars.
Your channel has become culturally enlightening! Thank you

Aside from meeting Ozbeg Khan, Ibn Battuta also met one of the richest individuals at the time during his time in India. And that was when he met Sultan Muhammad ibn Tughluq who ruled the Delhi Sultanate at the time.

So Extra History/Credits did a series on Ibn Battuta (as I'm sure you're aware) which was excellent, but limited and vague. I thoroughly appreciated this, particulsrly for the focus on the primary source and the details; the difficulty of this initial sea voyage was fascinating and quite scary to imagine how easily the Ponte Euxine could have swallowed this famous traveller! Subsequently the details of the Seven Great Sultan of the World and the court of the Khan was great. One of the great things about actually focusing on the source is hearing how incessantly Battuta boasts about everything, from the smallest ("You can even write while on the move in these carriage tents... you may wonder what I did, dedicated scholar that I am, while others slept and ate) to receiving royal favour, the khoomis(?), from the Khan's wife. Would love more of this style thank you as always

Great video.

You should also look into the lesser known Muslim explorer known as Khashkhash Ibn Saeed Ibn Aswad who was an Andalusian Muslim traveller who went to America way before Christopher Colombus. Khashkhash Ibn Saeed had peaceful trade relations with the Native Americans and he went to America in the year 889. More specifically he landed in a place which is now part of modern day Venezuela.

According to Islamic historian Mas'udi, Khashkhash returned to Andalusia with many valuable goods

From back when taking a walk to the next town over could just...make you dead. Make you a very, very dead person. And no one you loved would ever know what happened to you.

Ozbeg khan was descendant of Chinggis Khan, and Ozbegs were named to the Muslim qipchaq turks. And name of the Uzbek nation living in Uzbekistan came from that.
