What size Ukulele should I buy? What is the best size Ukulele?

Here is a Ukulele comparison video comparing 3 different size Ukeleles - a Soprano Ukulele, a Concert Ukulele, and a Tenor Ukulele. We have played a simple fingerstyle and strumming pattern on all 3 Ukuleles enabling the difference to be clearly heard...and of course, seen!

All models in the video are from the Kala Ukulele brand.

Soprano is a strumming machine, seriously it's so much fun to strum, not so good with picking, chords are sometimes a bit harder if you have big/chubby fingers but on the flip side the stretchy chords are easier to achieve with less distance to travel. Tenor is fantastic to pick or strum, you might have to stretch your fingers a lot further and unlike the soprano you have a lot more space to fit your fingers in with the added bonus that allows you to play barre chords further up the fret board, something you can't do on the soprano without a bit of difficulty. So if you just want to strum and are only going to stick to the first couple of frets, soprano might suit you, if you need the extra real estate and don't mind stretching your finger a bit further go the Tenor. I don't have a Concert but it's the middle ground I suppose, although concerts do have longer necks then soprano's so yeah.

Seems as if the bigger the ukulele the more it starts sounding like a guitar. I have a tenor and for me it is just perfect and it sounds really pretty. Soprano could be better if you want to play Hawaiian music but for other types of songs I prefer the tenor :)

personally, no one beats soprano. I feel that soprano is the original ukulele, and the sound of it is just how an ukulele should be. other than it´s nice, it is small, handy and portable : ) it suits my small hands perfectly too. however, the other ones are nice too, but soprano is like the classic one and all time favorite for me personally : )

That's a great tutorial. Hearing the different tones, of each individual Ukelele. Played with the exact same, plucking and strumming. I currently have a Concert Ukelele, love the tone. Learning skills and different songs. Playing for nearly a year now, best purchase I've made. Considering a Tenor ukelele, really love the tone on it! Need a hobby, Ukelele is great. Go get yourself one. Time, practice and patience. It's really worth it, as little as 10 minutes up to as long as you want! It's a great feeling, playing along and creating new sounds as you learn! 👌

if you have a lot of time and some knowledge of woodwork, I've found it incredibly fun to make my own Ukulele. It made me feel accomplished when I finally strung and strummed my own Concert ukulele. It has a decent sound to it as well, so I'm quite happy about it.

I started out with a soprano almost 2 years ago (some super cheap, learn to play, impulse buy) and I just ordered a really nice tenor. Looking forward to navigating the differences in play. :)

I have a tenor ukulele and I love it! Isreal “IZ” kamakawiwo’ole (somewhere over the rainbow) and Honoka&Azita play the tenor ukulele. I fell in love with their playing. So I bought a tenor ukulele too and it is sooo beautiful! You can do more on a tenor than on a soprano (because they’re so tiny). Sorry for my English.. I speak Dutch:)

I have a soprano makala dolphin bridge Uke and it's blue. If anyone is looking for a beginner uke I definitely suggest mine. I started playing a week ago and learned all my chords already and can play 50 songs. It looks and sound beautiful and it's not heavy at all. Don't let the toyish look fool you. Idk why I'm making this comment on this video but oh well 😂🤓
