In this video, I show you how to build a gourd tunnel trellis to grow gourds, luffas, and other climbing vegetables.

Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane - the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let's get into it! Cheers, Mark :)

I am keeping all these ideas tucked away in my brain for when I finally have my own house and the space to have projects like this. Thanks for sharing!

My husband and I are big fans of your videos. I am very surprised and happy to see you growing Chinese Loofa guards. I am a Chinese and I am growing it in my garden right now too at Florida. Just a little Information to share about this nutritious and yummy plant with you. This veggie grows very well in the southern part of China. It is a heat lover. It is one of the popular summer vegetables over there. Cook it like you cook the zucchinis, but be sure to peel the ridges down to the green skin level. Do not need to peel the green skin. Cut it into sections (2-3 inches long each), then quarter each one, wash it, then stir fried it with beef along with ginger, garlic, onion, oyster sauce, salt and pepper to taste. It will be done when you know the inside almost become transparent (don’t cook it til complete clear. It will loose the wonderful texture by doing so.) I will highly recommend growing this plant in your own garden because it is easy to grow, very minimum maintenance, most of all it is so yummy when you cook it right😋

When I was a child growing up in North Texas, we had a tunnel trellis structure on the back of our house. It had grapes on it every summer and provided awesome shade for playing in the back yard. We moved to East Texas before I was 9 years old and when I went back years later to visit, the new owners had torn it all down to expand the house. I was heart broken to say the least.

You were very honest in your criticism of your carpentry skills.

That's an impressive Gourd Tunnel. Ridge Gourd is one of my favorites for 30 years. Very nice Indian curry and mouth-watering chutney can be cooked. I will try growing Ridge Gourd in the UK in my small garden. Thank you for the video.

I love the idea of this tunnel. It grows vertically and provides shade relief to understory plants. Lol you crack me up “ you can’t handle the heat” 😊

We are in the process of improving on our trellis and raised beds. Gourd and luffas are among our favorite vegetables. You provided several tips that I am sure my husband would find helpful as we improve on our raised bed and trellis. Thanks for sharing

“You can’t handle the heat!” LOL that made me laugh. I’m going to use some cattle panels and arch them over from my one raised bed to the one next to it. I’ll use it for gourds, cucumbers and beans.

Thank you so much for this video.
This is the best garden bed that I have seen and will be trying from a first-time garden builder!

Good inspiration here. I only have a narrow strip of garden bed but I am keen to grow bitter gourds.
