Yadao and Hangkai 3.5hp motors! Are they worth it?

Testing out these motors I got on trade! The recoils on these things are not great by any means, but the motors themselves might be fun! Big mixed feelings on these motors, but I won’t count them out yet until I get them on the boat and in some water!

These motors come without gear oil in the propeller gearbox ! See Hangkai videos of how to remove prop & gearbox plate etc to add oil. Also 1 grease nipple needs grease application.
My newly purchased Yadao 3.5 starts OK but very smokey (perhaps too much oil in mixture? 1:30 for 10 hours running in at half throttle). Cooling water only seems to pass out of exhaust when rpm is high enough to turn prop. Beeswax on starter chord helps.

Every other review of these motors I have watched fot these Chinese outboards, they remove the prop and the cover for the lower unit and add oil to the gears. They are shipped dry.

No forward, reverse or neutral... Just a centrifugal clutch right under the engine block. Considering some people like to go slow, there is probably not enough life in that clutch to even make it to 10 hours break-in period.

With that much expected life in some of the parts, you might as well buy one of those ancient legendary 3.5 hp Yamaha "egg" motors. Also air cooled, have proven to be kinda reliable, and at least have a neutral and forward. (screw reverse, just keep on making progress and moving forwards)

I got tired of messing and fixing junk and getting stranded on the river. Just bought a brand new 20HP tohatsu electric start with 5 year warranty

Where do you find a Hangkai or Yadao 3.5 for $120 I can only find them for no less than $200 unless there is a massive discount that I missed

Can the pull starts be removed and engine started with cordless screw gun?

You should not pull the cord all the way out. Short powerful pulls is how you should do it.

I've never run leaner than 32:1 in any two stroke anything dirt bike, outboard, sled never had an issue. 50:1 is flirting with disaster IMO
