Dr. JJ talks to Home & Family about the types of Scoliosis, which is a sideways curvature of the spine. Signs of scoliosis includes curve in spine, uneven shoulders, uneven hips and leaning to one side. It is hard to detect at an early age and usually sets in when a child hits puberty and a growth spurt. She recommends girls being screened for scoliosis at the age of 10 and 12, while boys should get screened at 12 and 13.

Nice show on scoliosis. We are truly grateful for the awareness you have given to this condition. Thank you! Just to be accurate, Harrington rods were replaced with other type rods many years ago and your producer should recheck with her surgeon to understand what she has.

I was 6 when my CRAZY mother saw it. She saw everything and everything she saw early. Way before xray saw it :D So, she put me in the hospital. Not sure for 3 months or just for a month. I had to skip the school which I remember I enjoyed, even though I just started it. In the hospital I had a schedule - morning, noon and evening exercises. Massage back and front twice a day. Stretching once a day. AND SWIMMING! I loved it. One exercise was we laid down on our backs, feet up, kneeled and holding send bags - Heavy send bags. By the end of my being in that hospital, I remember us, kids, having a competition - who would hold longer their feet with send bags. I always won, because I could hold the infinitely! I was beating boys older than me. I kept doing those exercises almost all my teen years till I was 20 and still do in my 40-s occasionally it was a habit. I always had a flat belly, no matter how much I age. And I can walk infinitely. I mean I don't get tired. I can walk fast! Like you ran, I can walk same speed. Now my daughter is 28 months and I think I am more crazy than my mom was...Today I saw her one side is slightly lowered(also, hard to tell for sure, she never stops moving). I was planning to teach her same exercises but after she is 3.5.... But We are starting exercises TOMORROW! Oh, more tips. I did wear corset for few years. I hated it, but helps. I had a wooden triangle that I used for doing my writing and reading. And my mom put a wooden desk under my mattress. So Mattress matters. As firm as it can be, almost like a wood! And the orthopedic mattress is a BIG BSH! That causes a back problems. And the smallest possible pillow. You can check online posture exercises.
