INTRODUCTION:
TITLE: THE ORATOR
THE AUTHOR
Anton Paplovich Chekhov (1860-1904) author of The Orator; Russian short story writer, playwright, and physician, considered to be one of the greatest short story writers in world literature. He is distinguished for his formal and thematic innovations in the short fiction and drama genres, and jis writing is marked by a profound depth of insight into the universal human condition. Although his early work demonstrated subjective sentiments and observations, the ultimate structure of his short fiction was one of supreme emotional balance and tonal control.
SUMMARY
This is a story of an orator, Zapoikin, known for his eloquence and long speeches. In the story he made a major mistake of giving a funeral speech for the wrong person. His oration impacted the listeners and at the same time confused them. Upon realizing his mistake, he finished his speech that brought laughter to his friends and anger to the man he had mistaken to be the dead man in the funeral. The man in his speech was Prokofy Osipitch, who happened to be there.
BODY:
The story tells about a common experience in a human life. Even this was written a century ago, it still speaks of a reality in our present generation. There are a lot of big words in the story that to a young man like me are difficult to understand. However, after reading repeatedly, the message of the story became clear to me. The natural responses of the different character in the story and how the author clearly described the emotions in every scene gave me proper picture of each one of them. The simple illustration of a common life can easily be seen in the story. What is striking is the funny side of the author which was displayed in the story. I just can imagine how the people during his time laughed after reading this short story. I think the author was trying to entertain his readers through putting into writing their everyday lives. I think the author successfully captured his readers with this short story. How he described man’s ability to handle even the most embarrassing situation. How a mistake can be corrected and the different responses of different people to it are very real life experiences. The message of the story was relevant during the time of writing and is relevant in our present time.
CONCLUSION:
In everyday life, it is so easy to make mistakes. Everyone must face mistakes and not run from it. Avoiding to face up to mistakes makes a person weak and a coward. Whatever failures or problems we encounter must be dealt with head on. With every mistake a lesson is learned. And to every bad situation, there is always a funny side to it. So be ready to respond rightly to every situation you might face, whether good or bad. Be willing to learn from each one of them.
