YouTube streaming just got a major quality boost! The RTMPS update is officially out of beta, bringing HEVC and AV1 streaming to everyone - this means you can send much higher quality for your bitrate and get much nicer-looking streams, or you can maintain the same quality as before, but using a lower bitrate! Here's how to set this up and get the most out of it.
Stream VODs from AV1 testing:
(All of my recent streams here and on @lostsaves have been with AV1 or HEVC, too!)

In case anyone is now looking to for a 2nd GPU to support AV1 encoding to YT, the Arc A380 is an extremely inexpensive option for consideration. It was just on sale for $99.
I've been pushing 4K60 @ 23500 Kbps to YT for several weeks through my StreamPC, and it's amazing quality.
Low power requirements, adds small amount to ambient noise, just a great option if you're already in a dual PC setup and want to lower your electricity build if you're using a more power hungry card or CPU encoding.

Thanks for the PSA video! Looking forward to trying this out.

Interesting. Funny enough, I already do 1440p x265 CRF 15 for my YouTube uploads, but I didn't think that ingesting with a better codec would actually show improvements in transcoded quality. I just always expect YouTube to annihilate the quality. In this case I can see myself pushing 40 Mbps HEVC for 1440p streams anyways since my internet can handle it.

For Radeon 7000-series GPUs, why use the Speed preset? Thanks!

Great, quick one stop shop for all the info. Thanks!

This is so cool for IRL streamers. Those streams will now take a lot lesser bandwidth for similar or better quality. Bellabox becomes so much more viable as an option, with it’s handshake feature. Only the disconnect protection is missing.

Great video, though it did feel a bit awkward at the part where you werr telling what scale filter to choose as the video and audio was not matched in that you recommended area, but vidually showed choosing bilinear

there is a trick to force youtube to use 1440p encoding settings on your 1080p uplink, my latest video covers it

Hell yeah. Nice update.

My plan is to stream on YT once I'm back at it. I'm done with Twitch. I'll watch friends and creators that haven't switched and cash in on drops but I'm not giving them anymore of my money if I can help it.

I’m so happy you finally made this video. Ever since OBS 28 and HLS HEVC was an option I’ve been trying to spread the word that H264 is useless on YouTube. Then after OBS 29.1 it got even easier with RTMP HEVC. Thank you for making this video, big YouTubers really get the word out faster.

Another neat thing that you didn’t mention. Instead of upscaling your OBS output, you can use a custom stream key with a higher resolution to force YouTube to give you a higher resolution transcode despite sending a lower resolution. This is a great way to stream 1080p HEVC at low bitrate if you have poor internet but still get VP9 encoding. This is also a clutch trick for streaming 1080p on an ATEM mini and still get VP9 since ATEM maxes out at 1080p.

Been putting my Arc A770 to work on YouTube streams lately and hoenstly it just feels like a better stream experience. Going to experiment with the 1440p settings and see how they work in my setup.

Any reason for choosing “area” for the down scaling over anything else?
