Advocating for yourself has a bad rap. People often fear that others will see any attempt at self-promotion as bragging. Most people don’t like doing it—they feel uncomfortable about self-advocacy, imagining they’ll be seen as the obnoxious coworker who brags all the time.

But really, self-advocacy can look like this:

• Telling someone you’re really excited about an achievement and you wanted to share that moment with her.

• Asking a coworker if you can pitch in to help with his project, because you know you have skills that will prove valuable in it.

• Clearly highlighting your strengths when you introduce yourself to a company CEO in a chance meeting.

We all have a picture in our head of someone who’s a notorious self-promoter. However, the person we’re imagining is a 10 on the self-promotion scale. How to advocate for yourself at work
will look very different.

Though we might be imagining we look like that person when we promote our own work, we’re probably more like a 2 on the self-advocacy scale. The way we perceive ourselves internally is much different than how others perceive us. If you move to a 4 or a 5 on the scale, you’ll be advocating for yourself much more effectively. It might feel like a 10 at first, but it will look perfectly natural to everyone else.

How to advocate strongly for yourself at work will show how confident you are in your abilities. That will naturally draw people to seek you out when they need someone who can get the job done.

advocating for ourselves is hard, especially because most of us have been educated under the premise of being "humble" and not commenting on our achievements.
