I think the most terrifying thing is that Spongebob can simply carry around a core of critical Plutonium unharmed. Really lends credence to the whole "Bikini Bottom is Bikini Atoll after the nuclear tests" theory. Maybe Spongebob evolved a fortification against ionizing radiation and fissionable material while Squiddy has not. Tough break.

Heres the story for anyone who wants it:

After the events of Sb129, squidward actually had a more difficult time finding his time period, and as a result his body started mutating horribly due to the radiation. When he made it back to the present, he started attacking citizens, until spongebob managed to trap him in his basement with the demon cores. Now spongebob tries his best to kwep squidward safe, in hopes his friend will return.

It's even deeper when you think that Sopongebob is giving Squidward a choice, melting and suffering from the extreme radiation or closing the demon cores and starting the chain reaction that will end everything. Squidward is a an actual martyr

When I was in high school, our English teacher was describing the concept of gothic horror, and cited Nosferatu as an example. This immediately made everyone think of the Sponge Bob episode with Nosferatu, and then discussion changed to how the show becomes a sort of gothic horror if you look at it from Squidward's perspective.

Rock Bottom was a genius episode that genuinely scared me as a kid. (I was probably 6)

When I finally became determined to face my fears and finish the episode (7 or 8 years old), the ending really helped ease the tension of the episode.

The fact I remember this story at all proves that SpongeBob was children's entertainment at its prime.
