Olympic Stadium, Montreal - Canada HD Travel Channel

The architecture of the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Quebec in Canada is a lasting memory of the summer Olympics of 1976.
The Olympic swimming pool was biggest in the world up to the construction of the swimming pool in Sydney. Half of the bottom can be lowered or elevated, so that the water depth can be adjusted for the individual competitions.
The stadium was the first one with a variable roof. Especially in winter, when 100 tons of snow loads cover the roof, the construction had not prove itself, so that today it is firmly closed and heated in winter. Shortly before our visit the great marathon took place.
Emblem of the Olympic stadium is his sloping tower. From the observation deck on top you have a great panoramic view over the Olympic Village, the downtown, the St. Lawrence River and the harbor. However the tower was completed only 11 years after the Olympics, because the workers frequently were on strike during the construction phase.
The tower serves as the basis for funicular which brings the visitors in less than 2 minutes to the observation deck.

Die Architektur des Olympiastadions in Montreal in der Provinz Quebec in Kanada ist die bleibende Erinnerung an die Sommerolympiade von 1976.
Die Schwimmhalle war bis zum Bau der Schwimmhalle von Sydney die Größte der Welt. Der Boden des halben Beckens kann gesenkt und gehoben werden, so dass die Wassertiefe für die einzelnen Bewerbe angepasst werden kann.
Das Stadion war das erste mit variablem Dach. Die Konstruktion hat sich aber besonders im Winter, wo 100 Tonnen Schnee darauf lasten, nicht bewährt, so dass es heute fest geschlossen und im Winter beheizt ist. Kurz vor unserem Besuch fand im Stadion ein Marathonlauf statt.
Wahrzeichen des Olympiastadions ist sein schräger Turm, der einen umfassenden Rundblick über das olympische Dorf, die Innenstadt, den St. Lorenz-Strom und den Hafen gewährt. Der Turm wurde allerdings erst 11 Jahre nach der Olympiade fertig gestellt, weil die Bauarbeiter während der Bauphase häufig streikten.
Der Turm dient als Basis für eine Zahnradbahn, mit der man die Aussichtsplattform in weniger als 2 Minuten erreicht.

Such a Beautiful Stadium. It's too bad it's not used so much since the Expos left. I just hope such a good looking stadium doesn't wind up like the Astrodome in Houston. I'd be so sad for that to happen... Bring Back the Expos!
