RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 is remembered as a great game, but today we are going to see if it's true or if we are merely looking at it with rose-colored glasses.

You can also play this park without being in the tutorial. Go to 'other parks' and select 'build your own Six Flags park'.

RollerCoaster Tycoon is one of the great masterpieces of computer games.

It's not a game - it's art.

Chris Sawyer, surely one of the greatest ever games developers, made a game where you could have many rides whizzing around each other (that you created) .. and also had to keep the hundreds of visitors happy. And all on very limited hardware.

No matter how you look at it, it's a beautiful game:

Standing proudly alongside other British computer games triumphs such as Elite, Theme Hospital and Alien: Isolation.

If only he added some lean-in into the corners of his roller coasters. That would have fixed the lateral G's and actually make them pretty decent lol.

Making big, crazy and long RollerCoasters just so that my customers could die at the very end was my favorite thing to do

My grandma once gave me rollercoaster tycoon 1-3 on CD for my birthday. I didn't have a good enough PC back then and our family's shared laptop couldn't even handle it. So my neighbours gave me their old slightly better laptop which had a CD player. I remember taking that laptop everywhere I went and playing rollercoaster tycoon for hours everyday.

I still have the CD's so I might aswell fire up the old laptop and have the ultimate nostalgia experience. 😄

Bumbly Bazaar was a huge hit for me! I even named a portion of the park Hard Rock Park with crazy Rollercoasters.

RCT was a game I played to death as a kid, and I got it from a cereal box of all places. Minecraft on the other hand, has completely passed me by despite being like the biggest game of the last decade. Can't say I've even tried it.

FYI: There's a mod for RCT2 called OpenRCT2 that adds a bunch of bug fixes, cheats, settings, *multiplayer, * and more quality-of-life improvements.

I didn't do the tutorial thing, but the map they use in the tutorial is the same map as the one they use in the Build Your Own Six Flags Park scenario and that was pretty much all I did.

I should also add - that, unlike many geniuses, Chris Sawyer's game was great fun!

He captured the fun of owning your own theme park in a way which Bullfrog's "Theme Park" didn't [probably because it kept crashing on my Amiga ... maybe I'm not doing it justice (love Theme Hospital, though!)]

I can tell that Sawyer's favourite park is real-life RollerCoaster Tycoon park Blackpool Pleasure Beach ... because the obscure rides he put in the game can only be found at Blackpool.
And the same family has been running the park for 100 years - like a real-life RCT save! [Their latest double-launch coaster, Icon, is the best ride in the UK - I've been on it, it's terrific! :) - and they fit it inbetween the other rides, doing landscaping like you would do on RCT]
But he also drew much inspiration from Alton Towers and Thorpe Park, which present other good styles of ride.

It's unbelievable what he did - considering that only one artist and one musician helped him do it.

As I say, masterpiece.
