US elections: FBI investigates Trump campaign’s allegations of Iran-backed cyberattack

In response to a question about reports of Iranian-backed cyberhackers targeting Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, U.S. State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel said Monday that the latest attempts to interfere in U.S. elections are “nothing new for the Iranian regime."
Patel said that these concerns have been raised by the U.S. “for some time” and that Iran has “undermined democracies — or attempted to — for many years.” He also deferred to the FBI and Department of Homeland Security for further details on the steps being taken to combat domestic election influence by hostile foreign governments.
Trump's presidential campaign said Saturday that some of its internal communications were hacked and blamed the Iranian government, citing past hostilities between Trump and Iran, without providing direct evidence.
The FBI said Monday it was investigating a hack of Trump's election campaign, while the Iranian government has denied the allegations it is involved in the hack.
