Russia’s recognition of breakaway Ukraine regions is ‘dark sign’, says Johnson

Boris Johnson has said Vladimir Putin’s recognition of the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk was ‘plainly in breach of international law’ and was a ‘flagrant violation of the sovereignty’ of Ukraine.

The UK prime minister also described it as a ‘dark sign’ that things were moving in the wrong direction. Following a televised address aired on Russia’s state-run news channel, Putin joined the leaders of the LPR and DPR to sign a decree recognising the independence of the two territories
