Covid-19: A mask-off scenario in Singapore only possible in 1-2 years, says expert | THE BIG STORY

MP for Sengkang GRC Jamus Lim has called for Singapore to continue revisiting its stance towards mask-wearing, as the Covid-19 situation develops here.

Acknowledging that masks are an important tool in the Covid-19 fight, he said in a recent Facebook post that Singapore can evolve its Covid-19 policy, as it moves towards treating the disease as endemic. This includes paying more attention to indoor air quality.

Dr Leong Hoe Nam, an infectious diseases specialist from the Rophi Clinic at Mount Elizabeth Novena, shares his opinion on this development.

Review the outdoor mask mandate and consider aligning it more closely with what the science says; consider making masks optional in non-crowded outdoor public areas (outside of the crowded CBD and shopping district of course), and instead insist on stricter adherence to mask-wearing in indoor public areas.

As a result of having to wear masks in the hot and humid outdoors, many people suffer from mask fatigue and thus tend to rip off their masks in indoor offices and classrooms, and I'm sure we do not want that. It is much less risky to be optionally-masked outdoors and strictly-masked indoors, than to be strictly-masked outdoors and being unmasked indoors. The outdoor mask mandate is backfiring and increasing the risk of indoor transmission more than many people think.

Dr Leong explanation is always very good and interesting to hear. Like his happy and smiling face especially during this Covid situation. Every where is so stress & gloomy. He is so humerus. until then we need to impose laws that prohibits robbers and snatch thieves from wearing masks so that they can be better identified and caught in the act..

Instead of staying at home in our small HDB flats of 80 sqm. Town councils should consruct sick bays at the ground floor with portable toilets now. Volunters can help to serve SIA type of meals. Don't push the responsibilty to GPs who charge high consultation fees.

Sweden never had any mask mandate and the cases and deaths are similar as other European countries that requires it

Dr Lim it is too premature to even think of mask off situation.
Dr Nam you are right, no one wants rose garden repeat
People are to be encouraged to wear masks, maintaining distancing, hand hygiene for long.
Not a big deal as compared to suffering from a disease about which even science does not know when will it disappear .
Better safe than sorry.
