How to Mix Powdered Milk that Won't Make You Gag

Powdered milk...it's the stuff nightmares are made of, right? Wrong! If you haven't tried powdered milk in the last 15-20 years (and I don't blame you) you'll be pleasantly surprised at how delicious powdered milk can be. In fact, in a blind taste test, participants couldn't tell the difference between fresh milk and the powdered milk. AWESOME!

Because powdered milk is such a vital part of your food storage, isn't about time you learned how easy it is to make it something you'd actually WANT to drink?

We grew up on powdered milk, I was visiting my brother a while ago and we were laughing about how we could never understand why anyone would want to drink a glass of milk until we tried "real" milk, same goes for cheese, I remember the first time I had real cheese, I thought I hated cheese cause we only had the stacks of processed...and no not singles wraps, those were fancy. My mom grew up poor and she was extremely frugal. We had troubled teens who came to live with us so she had a lot of mouths to feed. She ran a tight ship, and saved, sewed our clothes and said no to us for a lot of things. The money she saved allowed us to go on ski trips and summer camping vacations. I am almost 50 now and my parents were able to help all of us to put downpayments on homes, something my sister and I who were single parents would never had been able to do on our own. Thanks for that mom. I buy real milk now, but I have some powdered milk put away for a rainy day.

I thought the point of using powdered milk is because you don't have any fresh milk. I feel cheated.

the only reason to buy powdered milk back in the day was it was cheaper to buy. but these days it seems more expensive then just getting a gallon of milk.

As a senior living alone I ended up throwing away more milk than I used. Powdered milk is a sensible way to make as much as you need at the time of use. Thank you for the vanilla tip. I'm going to use it on my next bowl of cereal.

And I also am a fulltime RVer now that we are retired. I buy powdered milk to mix it up only when its needed and saves room in the RV fridge

I agree with Crystal. I don’t like making messes or cleaning up messes, so here’s a tip to make this process less messy. You saw in the video those clouds of very fine powder rising as Crystal poured the milk into the water, and then again as she began to stir. I really dislike that fine powder. You may even find yourself breathing it in. So here’s a simple trick:

Instead of pouring the water into the jug and then adding the powder, hold the bag of powdered milk upright, lower the empty jug, upside-down, over the bag, then turn them both over together, pouring the milk into the jug as you do. You don’t get clouds of powder doing it this way. Then pour in water gradually, stirring as you do. I do this in the sink and pour water directly from the tap. That way I can tip the jug and let the water slide down the side of the jug into the milk as I stir, instead of hitting the powder with the water directly. Very little of the milk ends up in the air or on the counter or in your lungs this way.

I learned when I was an adult, that Mom often fixed up a half gallon of powdered milk to add to a half gallon of whole milk to make it last longer. I had never noticed the difference.

My Dad used 1 quart whole milk to 3 quarts powdered milk and made sure it was super cold, like right at 33 degrees F …. just before freezing... and one could NOT tell the difference! This was back in the late 70s and powdered milk was cheaper than whole milk at the time.

For anyone wanting to know an updated price, the case of 12 pouches is 64.80 at the LDS home storage center online store. Each pouch (like the one shown in the video) makes 2 gallons of milk. This equates to approximately $2.67 per gallon of milk, which is less expensive than a gallon of store brand milk and much less expensive than name brand milk now.

Everyone always acts like it's fake milk or something it is still milk just dehydrated it's not like many other things that are a bunch of Chemical compounds mixed together to taste like something else. And when you mixit(rehydrate) it instead of going by their instructions put a third less water in it it tastes better that way and gets closer to whole milk.

I grew up in an era you ate what was put in front of you. I have a high tolerance for really bad cooking 😂

As a kid in the 70's, my mom used to mix powdered milk with regular milk. We got used to the taste and it was quite a savings. Today, powdered milk is as expensive or more expensive as regular milk. Only worth buying for emergency storage or an occasional recipe that calls for it.

This was the only milk I could afford to use when my kids were small and they used to stand around waiting for me to stir it up. Their favorite thing was to drink it right away (any temperature) because they LOVED the froth. They thought it was a huge treat. LOL.

When my dad lived in Accra, Ghana, back in the mid 1960's, powdered milk was the norm. We, his children, had no problem putting a spoonful of Nestlé in a glass and adding refrigerated water.
I'm now 60, and a prepper, and I've always had several containers in the pantry. With this Covid19 'preventing' everyone from making frivolous trips to the store, my wife and I are good to go.

Tip: I've been using powdered milk for decades for my coffee; I like coffee HOT & CREAMY, & have always found Coffee Mate etc. NASTY & greasy!! Also, instead of 'regular' powdered milk, I've found Nido brand from Nestlé is great; there are different ones, all they are is powdered milk with vitamins added, and they call them "toddler formula" etc., but they are just as good!! I find them in the Mexican food aisle in Lucky & Walmart; they cost a lot less than regular powdered milk, plus I get extra nutrition!!!! Blessings to y'all!!

When my children were young this is what I did I put half regular milk half powdered milk so out of 1 gallon store-bought milk I got 2 gallons. Another tip I was told and don't store your milk in the door of your refrigerator because it doesn't stay as cold and it doesn't last as long this is coming from a refrigerator company. I used to store mine in my door as well I don't anymore

If you don't have access to an LDS center, try the Latin American brands in the ethnic section of your grocery store, or find it online. It contains actual milk fat, which means it won't keep as long as American brands, but it tastes so much better.
