To summarize: A superloud 70 year old flying toddler that can chew through wood and never wears diapers.

That parrot knows exactly what it's doing and is enjoying every moment.

These FYIs are very important to prevent ignorant people from getting parrots because they are cute. You’re right, they are a serious commitment & can’t be left alone all the time because they can get stressed. Most are very social creatures.

"It's like having a toddler for 70 years..." That's all I needed to hear. 😂

As the husband of someone who owns multiple parrots … THANK YOU for this public service announcement.

I have two African Grey parrots, and I can confirm that Maya is giving great advice. Do not get a parrot! I love my birds to death, but it truly is like having perpetual toddlers for the rest of your life.

My auntie's king parrot just died, and she had him for around 40 years, since she was a kid. She loved him with all her heart, and she still said she'd never have another bird

I LOVE how she is constantly interrupting until you call her out on it 😂

A toddler for 70 years! How did the pirates even deal with that?

I learned I never wanted a parrot when I met one while I was in high school and she mimicked the sound of the phone ringing. Constantly. It was her favorite noise to make.

* Parrot being loud and interruptive *
“And they’re super LOUD can you be loud?”
Parrot: Well if you’re going ask like that now I’m not gonna do it.

This needs to be said. Thank you! Amazing animals that must be respected and full responsibility taken.

I had a friend renting in our basement and she asked if she could get a quaker parrot and I knew it was her dream to get another one after her first died due to an accident. So I said yes, THANK GOD that the friend's room was underneath the living room on the otherside of the house in comparison to my bedroom. My friend worked 8-10 hours a day and I was at home due to a head injury that physically disabled me for life. The bird screamed/yelled to itself more often than not. Luckily the bird really liked me (most animals do, thus why I eventually became an animal foster), so if I wanted quiet, all I had to do was bring the bird upstairs to hang out with me. My friend could never get the bird to be quiet with her, but the bird and I had an understanding that he needed to whisper/talk quietly if he wanted to hang out with me during the day (aka I put him back in his cage if he was too loud, and he figured out real quick why he was being put away).

I actually saved the bird life after he fell and broke a tail blood feather when learning to fly with my friend (friend was freaking out as it was really late at night when it occurred and exotic vets weren't open then). Flour is a great blood coagulant in an emergency. The bird survived with minimal blood loss.

I worked at a pet shop with a female Parrot named Ollie. I was one of only guys who worked there and for some reason I was the only one she liked. So, for the next 3 years I fed, spray bathed, and talked to Ollie until I had to leave for University. She was 20 years old when I started working there and my boss was 65. She promised to leave me Ollie in her will lol.

Thank you for pointing this out!! When people find out I have parrots the usual response is "I had one but had to rehome it because it was so difficult" or "it died unexpectedly".
If you still want one then consider adopting. Then you already know what problems they have and can work with them to give them a better life.

One thing thats crazy as people like myself or other parrot owners have to think about putting their birds in their will, because there is a good chance that parrots like macaws or cockatoos will likely outlive their owners

I had a neighbor, very sweet elderly lady who used a wheelchair, lost her husband and moved into the house next to me when I was a teen. She and her husband Ralph had gotten a scarlet macaw shortly after their marriage. Almost 50 years later, and Ralph was gone, and that bird sat by the window calling out for Ralph all day every day. It just about broke that poor woman. I helped her son find the bird a new (and good!) home when she finally hit her limit - even though she loved her pet, she just couldn't take care of him physically or emotionally anymore. He actually ended up outliving her by about 7 years.

I truly love parrots, but I would not be able to keep one. I will go support my local bird sanctuary and rescue/rehab instead and spend time with them that way.

You don't own a parrot, the parrot owns you. They need constant care.
