Finna is an AAVE word with the same etymology as gonna. It's derived from the southern phrase "fixing to" but means something between "going to" and "about to."

I was always under the impression that it was ‘going to start an action with the intention of completing that action’
I didn’t think it etymologically stemmed from fixing to

They should be teaching kids a standardized aave, alongside Mexican Spanish and American English. They currently teach Spain’s Spanish in schools and it’s way different than Mexican Spanish which Americans would be better off learning.

Fixin' to comes from Scots-Irish southern people, same with a lot of the food recipes that blacks have claimed to invented.

Wild. Always thought it was just 1337 variation for GONNA based on keyboard and miss typing. F next to G. I next to O.

Thanks for the explanation! I knew what it meant, but never knew where it came from, and this makes a lot of sense ☺️

My white grandfather who grew up in rural Arizona and Oregon during the 30s said "fixta" and i always assumed it was some western rancher thing until i met ppl from the rest of the country later on as a young adult. My grandma (his wife) also had a slight southern twang and she grew up in southern oregon on a dirt farm in the same era....

I always wondered what the history of their family was that led to it. My g-grandmother (grandads mom) spoke the same way.

My grandparents moved to seattle after ww2 and my mom therefore didn't keep the accent, although some phrases and words did carry on. I dont think i have any of it in my speech which is kinda sad.

I'm form Maryland. I lived in Southern Virginia for four years. I picked up "finna' and still use it 'til this day in Maryland.

I say fitta. With that thought... There is a youtube video going over many US dialects which is pretty cool. It would be cooler if there was AAVE dialect comparison from different spots in the US. I'll be waiting lol

I chose the Georgia version finna. For its ease of pronunciation and the speed with which I can rattle it off with other words. ✨

It's an easy mark to mock people for. I both love and hate it.

Ay man can you make a video about how to pronounce sentences in AAVE? I know people who speak AAVE pronounce things differently. Can you make a video about that? Very much thanks
