But this is demonstrating the reasoning of why the shortcuts weve learned actually work.

Its about teaching you the logic and intuition of the method, instead of plugging and chugging.
Its like deriving an equation, instead of just being given the equation. You only derive the equation once to understand it, then you use it on its own from that point on once you understand it intuitively.
