Russia claims victory in Moscow-controlled Ukraine referendums, paving the way for annexation

Russia says it will annex areas of Ukraine under its control and escalate the war after Moscow claimed victories in referendums it organised in four occupied regions. The vote results announced on September 27, 2022, appear to pave the way for a Crimea-style annexation of the Ukrainian territory. The US and its Western allies have dismissed the referendum votes in Luhansk, Kherson and part of Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia as illegitimate.

Literally everyone in the occupied areas could’ve voted “no” and Putin would still claim victory.
Then again, I imagine it would be difficult to vote against Russia when a bunch of heavily armed guards (way more than what would be necessary for security) are staring over your shoulder as you vote.

I notice there is "nyet" on the ballot paper. This is better than in Crimea at the time. There they were presenting two complicated alternatives which approximately meant something like "join now" or "join later".
It's a pity that such votes cannot be done in a fair and free manner while a war is ongoing. It would have been useful to know what the people in those regions want. It is not completely out of the question that they would have voted in favor of Russia, albeit not with such a large margin.

Local people say that mostly women and elderly men voted because men were afraid to vote as they could have been conscripted to the army. So the % of voted seems very dubious.

From Outer Mongolia in 1945, to Abkhazia and South Ossetia in 2008, to Crimea in 2014, and now the Donbas in 2022. Wow, is it coincidence that none of these regions ever voted against independence, or voted against joining Russia? 🙄
