Why does Dungeon Meshi feel so different?

What we’ve got with Dungeon isn’t a great story or stunning subtext. This anime by all means is pretty regular in that regard. But what we do have here is a dreamy show with a unique aesthetic that sells the story and the world it’s in. But there’s something more to Dungeon Meshi. Something that makes it one of a kind… Enjoy the essay.

I personally wouldn't call Laios a sociopath. He's more like a high functioning autistic in a fantasy world. Of course some of the things he does are off the wall and seem insensitive, but as someone with autism who sometimes has similarly structured deductions to and curiosities towards various situations, Laios really is just someone whose brain functions differently than his cohort's.

As a manga reader who has been since the beginning of dungeon meshi I resolved my self to never seeing this animated until they did and it was amazing

I think you misread this show. I'm glad you enjoyed it, but I feel you've done a disservice by claiming it's charm is the only point in which it succeeds, not touching on its very solid worldbuilding and how complex the character work is. The series does an incredible job at slowly providing the greater details of how the world functions, as well as the complicated history that shaped it.

I believe you are misrepresenting Laios when you call him a sociopath and attribute his success in the dungeon to it, considering part of his motivation to conquer the dungeon comes from his desire to save a loved one. Laios succeeds because he is able to put in the effort to adapt where others are too on guard, and because he holds a passionate fascination for the creatures that dwell within. As others have mentioned, Laios is better described as a high functioning autistic rather than a sociopath.

I think you can do better, and I hope you do, but this one was a miss for me. I am sorry.

We started to watch the show, every time we eat pizza at home. It was a realy bad idea! On the one hand, we realy love the anime. Its jsut funy, how every time they eat something new and celebrate the cooking like mad. On the ather hand, its realy often bloody and slimy. Still, we managed to eat our pizza each time. :P

lol, I very much disagree with this take. especially your overuse/false use of Psychopath/sociopath in your videos to describe everyone who isn't Mental Whitebread.
Laois is Monster-obsessed man with Autism, Kabro is his Foil as a social/human expert. the first half is somewhat generic, till the second half explodes the scope and complexity of the story.

I think you may need to pay attention to the show more if you think it lacks subtext, or that the dungeon isn't interesting on it's own, or that the story is weak, and to call Laios a Sociopath? What? Just a criminally bad take on this show
