Turkish Bookseller Wins Copyright Case Against French Luxury Brand Hermes | Firstpost America

In an interesting turn of events, a bookseller in Turkiye won a copyright infringement case against French fashion luxury giant Hermes. The bookseller wanted to trademark his 15-year-old store’s name as “Hermes Sahaf” but the French titan wasn’t pleased by it. So, the brand launched a legal fight against the bookseller with an aim to prevent the use of Hermes. However, despite having stringent trademark regulations, the court ruled in favour of the bookseller. The seller feels it is a big win for himself, as no one can own a name which holds such a significant heritage. Watch the video to know more.

I can't even begin to tell you the numbers of times I have confused my copy of Pride & Prejudice with my $9, 700 Hermes RMS Weekender bag! It's so frustrating!

Oh yes, Hermes Sahaf the book store totally got people confused with Hermés Paris the clothing store.

YES!!!! This time, the little guy won! Congratulations sir! NOBODY has the right to claim sole ownership of a name! I'm very happy for you!

I am so glad the "French brand" lost this. Coopting the name of a god in ancient literature is preposterous.

Great! Down with these companies that take regular names, words, phrases and cultural stories to trademark them for their profit. Not long ago, Disney tried to trademark Dia De Los Muertos. Let's not forget all their stories are from public domain.

Hermes is simply a Greek god. How can the Name of a god be copyrighted???

People need to realize what a scam those so called high brands are

This is the same case when Kylie Jenner wanted to have the name Kylie all for herself, but Kylie Minoque won the case 😂 Glad the bookstore won and taught Hermes fashion house a lesson! 😎

In fact, a big luxury company shouldn't be taking an existing (well-known) name as their own & should instead have created a name for themselves.

But Hermes the orange giant has no problem appropriating Turkey’s Izmir. One of their colorway which is blue Izmir, is named after Turkey’s Izmir

I went to Paris once. I was afraid to walk into the Hermes store. Now, if it had been the bookstore…🤩 I’m happy the bookstore won. Books rule.

Also they are of two different industries. So happy Hermes get to keep his bookstore's name.
