For those wondering where it actually came from I'm a bit hazy on the details but
It was originally derived from a plant in a northern Africa whose bud or flower resembled the heart we know today. Eventually that plant became part of their currency and then slowly started to grow into the traditional role we know from there.
This is what I came to know

I heard it represents two human hearts fused together, because of the odd shape, when put together with another it forms what you know as the "heart". And since you need two to complete it it's a symbol of love
