Trust me from a 30yr veteran of wild camping both woods & beach camps, Some very strange folk hanging about & lurking in the night.

The most dangerous animal you'll ever meet in the woods late at night is a human

Anyone who’s seen Scooby Doo will know it’s usually the former mine owner pretending to be a ghost so he can steal the gold.

I agree with the people saying "If something doesn't feel right, go with your gut, and leave." You stayed longer than I would have, and I'm an always armed Texan. I packed up the wife and kids in the middle of the night about 28 years ago, near Togwotee Pass in Wyoming. If we had stayed, probably nothing would have happened, but I just had an overwhelming urge to leave.

I've been wild camping in the US for years. Been harassed by deer, skunk and visited by black bear in the dark and none of it bothered me. The first and only time I had a run-in with a person I nearly had to shoot him and his dog. I packed up me and my son and we cleared out. Humans are the real danger in the woods.

You go with your gut. If you don't like the feel of something whether camping or car camping you leave it is that simple. Your gut with people and environments are never wrong. You did the right thing. There are always other camps you can do where you don't feel something is off. Stay safe and blessed.

I did a remote camp once in a deep forest in North Wales . Arrived late near dark, never did a reckie . Awoken up in my tent at 3am to sound of snapping twigs - pitch dark apart from a moonlight . Peeped out my tent saw a figure of a large man about 30ft ahead of my tent . It scared me i stayed in my tent and i stayed put until first dawn .
I peeped out my tent and that large figure of a man was a fallen large tree stump on a mound 😅
And the morale of the story always do a reckie whilst day light around your camp 👍

Thirty years back, I camped with my son in a wood near to Rayleigh, Essex, UK. Got the tent up in a small thicket. After it got dark, around 9 pm, we heard voices shouting from various directions, then began hearing shotguns firing. This racket slowly got closer to our location. Seems like we had camped in the middle of some kind of bird shooting operation. The bangs got pretty close, and were all around us. We quickly got that tent packed away and scooted out of there pretty quickly.

I would be too scared to hike and camp in the woods alone at night. I prefer to stay home lock my doors and say my prayers.

The guy you spoke to on the road is most likely the guy who creeps people out at night on purpose who are trying to camp out.

You trusted your gut. You know what you experienced and you know that it wasn’t humans doing it. Much more to this Earth than we truly understand.

a few weeks ago I went to camp at Secret Beach on the coast of Oregon. When I arrived at the location, two really creepy masks were attached to the trees. Usually I would have ignored it, but Ive been at this location once before and just got the weirdest vibes and after seeing this, figured just not to risk it and went to a different location a couple miles away. Yes its stupid, but I've seen some really weird stuff while camping and have learned the hard way to not risk stuff like this.

Not every place is safe, especially to sleep! take it from an old US park ranger if you get a "bad feeling" (get the hell out now). Leaving you stuff there I believe saved you life. Your were given the "warning signs" that something did not want you there. Most people don't live to tell the tile and I cant express how lucky you are. remember: you are the Invader in their home! These words helps me my first time from an old ranger I learned so much from. "Best thing to take away from this is the knowledge you have gained and to never make the same mistakes again! Welcome to the club!

Canadian here, As an Adult I refuse to camp like that, in the bush with a tent, I could be armed to the tits and I still would`nt. There are elementals you cannot see to fight until its too late. Stay safe and always trust your gut.

Always pays to listen to your instincts. Rocks don't get thrown by foxes and squirrels. Would be cool if it was bigfoot though. 😅

I took my little brother camping in the “off season” winter in California many years ago. I backpack, fish, trail run, and rock climb in the western US so I spend a lot of time outdoors. We were just hoping to hike during the day, cookout, and camp. There was no attendant to the campground and it was empty other than one other person at an RV. We camped on the far side of the grounds from that man who was sitting in a chair facing our direction. He didn’t seem too friendly and didn’t wave back to us. That night, items started going missing from our camp. Silently. Non food or scented items so less likely to be an animal doing this. The last straw was I walked my little brother to the stall toilet and when I turned around, the toilet paper roll I set outside the door for him was taken while I was rummaging in my car parked 10 yards or so away. My brother asked for the toilet tissue and I discovered it missing. It was a still and dry night. Not windy. Somebody was messing with us. We immediately packed and left. We suspected that other fella wanted the campground to himself. People are so strange. To sound like a typical American, I am armed in certain forests or certain areas of a forest. Lots of other Americans are. In California we struggle with illegal drug growers even after legalization of marijuana so there are unfortunately some unsavory characters who don’t want others around. Glad you’re safe.

Normies sometimes ask me why I always in to the woods "strapped for bear".
They seem to miss the fact, that being alone deep in the wilderness can be fucking dangerous.
And: no.
I don't mean the regular animals.

Blimey…. This reminds me of a time myself and my friend were wild camping in a forest… same thing you have witnessed as far as large rocks and branches being thrown…. It was so scary, every time we thought it had settled… smack, there was another rock…. It was so unsettling…. Neither of us could see anything causing it… we packed up and left asap…. By this time it was getting light…. A man walked past us on the lane adjacent to the woods and said ‘Morning’ … it was him, I know it was him! He was so interested in creating conversation so we could explain or fears and we didn’t… he kept dropping hints…. He seemed happy with his nights work. He was out of place, filthy fingernails and cuts from brambles, but a new wax jacket, expensive boots and a mark on his head where some sort of camera or light must have been attached, yet he said he had only been out since first light… it was so bloody scary …. We left, he disappeared into woodland and we then got stalked all the way back to the car… I think he was playing a game in his mind xx

the worst part of camping like this is while your in the tent anyone can walk right up to the tent unannounced to you till they make themselves known.
