People are saying how they hate Haruki's short hair. Whilst I absolutely loved his long hair with all my heart, the short hair symbolised haruki letting go of his upsetting past and becoming stronger. Yes, he did say its because 'he was hot' but writers always include symbolism which readers can interpret in anyway. For me, his long hair brought many negative memories due to the fact that he grew it purely because of Akihiko. But especially after the assault, Haruki comes to the realisation that he is his own person and strong enough to live with a purpose and not simply for Akihiko. Hence why I loved the hand slap scene as it really showed a shift in his character. We see his assertiveness there which was shocking based on the fact that he initially always wanted to make others happy and never really considered his wellbeing. I think we should applaud Natsuki because she cleverly illustrated that message with 'just' a haircut change. Haruki's new look is him officially finding himself and we should appreciate that! This is how i see it anyway. xx PS: (thats not saying that haruki doesnt love akihiko cuz we all know he does, but its a good sign of character development)

I know I might get hate for this but I honestly love the portrayal of the toxicity from Akis side. Most romances in manga/anime are so fluffy and the only problems stem from love rivals. While in most real relationships it's rather due to personal issues, differences in morals etc. Akis relationship with Ugetsu was already toxic and he purposefully flirted with Haru although he was aware of Harus feelings, then there was also the assault. This is all typical f*boy behaviour and I'm glad that they showed it. Dont get me wrong I will never excuse Akis assault and that shouldn't be romanticized at all! I'm also glad that Haruki stood up for himself after that and it was clearly shown that it wasn't ok. I also appreciate how Aki asked Haru if it was ok to touch him after that. We have to bare in mind that their relationship is deeper and longer, they have known each other for a while. Therefore, it is realistic that Haru is more understanding and willing to forgive. So yeah I like that they showed a not so pure love story. I for my part was always more invested in those two than MaXUe. 100th disclaimer: I do not excuse the assault and it still leaves a bitter aftertaste. But I still love them.

Haruki is actually my fave character in Given. I was so hurt when Haruki was hurting and I could feel his pain whenever he saw/knew that Akihiko was playing around. I can see that Akihiko wants to be a good man for Haruki and Haruki has accepted him and I’m happy for them, but whenever I think about the times Akihiko hurt Haruki I just come to dislike him again, so I feel conflicted all the time- 😭😭

i love the haircut tbh. before the haircut, when akihiko was forcing himself on haruki, haruki didnt even worry about himself. he was scared but he still asked akihiko what was hurting him. he even said "dont make that face. tell me what's wrong. ill do anything for you" but after the haircut, he realises he is his own person. even though he loves akihiko it doesnt means he should let akihiko walk all over him and let him pour his frustations on himself. the haircut symbolises haruki's personal growth. he's grown to love and treasure himself. it also doesnt mean he stopped loving akihiko. you cant reverse those feelings he felt for so long in a night. he can like akihiko and treasure his own self at the same time.
