2025 Volvo EX90 | MotorWeek First Drive

The second generation CX90 ushered in a new era for Volvo back in 2015 with refreshing styling, advanced tech and a platform for plug in electrification. But the three row SUV never went fully electric. Instead, Volvo developed an all new model, which leapfrogs the XC90 as the brand's flagship. The 2025 EX90.

Greg Carloss heads out to Orange County, California for a first drive!

Ford, Volvo, Tesla and Rivian, repeat after me: a large glass sunroof needs a physical shade.

Cars like these are the pinnacle of what's wrong with the modern automotive manufacturer industry. Bland copy/paste crossover SUV designs with more and more screens replacing buttons each year to save money, no matter how much worse it makes interacting with the vehicle.

"a refreshing lack of switchgear..."
Meaning taking your attention off the road to use the damn screen. No thank you.
Compete with Tesla by building better cars, which is not hard to do, not by mimicking the all-screen interior.

We chose a Honda pilot over an xc90 to replace our old XC 90 because of the lack of buttons. These car companies are trying to convince us we want this by gaslighting us. The reality is it’s cheaper for them to do.

"The Zhejiang Geely Holding Group is based in Hangzhou, which is located in south-east China's Zhejiang Province. The company launched their automotive business in 1997 and eventually took over ownership of the Swedish-made Volvo brand in 2010." -- Geely's entry to the US market bypassing tariffs. Well done FTC!

There is nothing refreshing about a lack of buttons. The overreliance of screen controls is universally hated by anyone who gives a dam about being an attentive driver. Having to go thru a series of menus to turn on heated seats or adjust the mirror is cumbersome, non intuitive, distracting and all around terrible design.Motorweek really should try to tone down the brownnosing to get their corporate loaner cars.

I still want real top grain leather. I don’t want to invest in the charging infrastructure. I need a battery that charges in 15 minutes and has no issues with near or below 0 degree temperatures. I also want to be able to turn off internet connection and delete location tracking info.

The car market really doesn't need any more 80k+ electric toasters. It's already saturated with them and many car makers are pulling the plug (pun intended) on EV production.

Assembled in South Carolina with parts 100% made in China and shipped to S.C. There is nothing Swedish in “Volvo”.

They pulled the S60 in the US market and have this thing. Yikes. The S60 was a great looking car and should have had an all electric version that looks like the mild hybrid or plug in hybrid that is going away.

1:34 It's cool that the front camera has defroster elements.
I wonder if there are ones down by the wiper blades.

does the brake lights come on correctly when using one pedal driving? Hyundai does not so that’s a safety issue. watching this inside a 2024 Volvo S60.

I always like that Volvo styling. Sleek, yet understated. The interior has that Rivian vibe, at least the dashboard imo. Clean and simple.

Not bad for a Chinese car.
(no disrespect to the Chinese, but they are new-ish in the auto industry, and yes Volvo is Chinese owned)

I'll be a contrarian here. Very expensive, but I like it (even though I generally dislike EV's). An EV for adults.

I look forward to watching it bomb like Polestar. Oh, AND pay upwards of $90k for cloth and vinyl interior appointments, hysterical. Hard pass.

Like Volvo but this is not at all attractive to me.

At some point Volvo will make first contact with your EX 90 and enable the Lidar and all the delightful functions of your infotainment system. They promise...it's coming. Right around the corner.
