Helmholtz Resonator - Brain Waves

The Helmholtz resonator may be the simplest acoustic device and is used in an approximate form for everything from speaker design to automotive intakes. I show where the idea came from and show the expression for the resonant frequency. I also do a simple demonstration.

Dude you're so halarious. Didn't know this could be that entertaining. Keep it up. This Channel deserves more Subs. Thanks for explaining though ;)

Thank you very for great but simple explanation of helmholt resononator. It's really easy to capture that idea in a moment.

Thank you very much for the kind and very nice explanation with an application in car engine. If you could make another video talking more about its application in different fields in today's world, it would be great.

This is a great video; I just wish my professors had been this concise when I was in school. Thank you for making it!

I've ended up down this rabbit hole trying to eliminate a resonant frequency "drone" produced by the exhaust on my car. I've seen several forum entries describing how to create a so-called branch resonator (aka J Tube) but most aren't written by people that really understand what they're writing. My questions are these: 1) If I know the frequency I'm trying to eliminate should I simply use the formula provided in this video to cancel it out or would that amplify the tone? 2) With there not being much room under my car there will have to be a bend. Does the length of this bend factor into the calculation? 3) Does the diameter of the tube leading to the volume of air matter? 4) Considering my drone is around 100Hz, what is the width of frequency I could expect from this "bandstop filter"?
Thanks again!

First, I love the math shirt.
Second, how do you model soundboards with various holes in it besides the main hole over the strings? Are these just more degrees of freedom with less mass and stiffness? Along those lines, how do you model the soundboard with interaction from the strings as they are pinned to the saddle? By that time, are we best suited for finite element land as opposed to the lumped parameter models?

great video, as always.
question: what if we don't have a volume, it's all L and A?
I am asking this for installing pressure sensor on a pipe (called IPV; indicator port valves) in order to measure the pressure inside the cylinder of reciprocating compressors. Helmholtz resonance can cause readings that don't reflect the actual pressure inside the cylinder. how to calculate the Helmholtz resonance in that case

Thanks. Can you verify the formula you wrote down and how accurate it is to experimental value?

All of us humans (young or old) seem to have an innate ability to identify by ear when a water bottle that is being filled by a water cooler will reach capacity. We detect this by sound. But what is it exactly that we are perceiving? A certain pitch? A numerical value that is true for all bottle shapes? Please advise!

Brilliant explanation!! I really loved it... Could you explain how much next area is necessary for effectively constructing a Helmholtz resonator.
and
1) As temperature is function of Speed of sound and temperature varies (-30 to 30 degree C) on this planet from winter to summer will the frequency of sound change??
2) What if we proportionately change the next area??

Really interesting video, thank you.
I have a question, I have researched inlet resonators in 2 stroke engines before and adding a resonator increased the performance of the engine. The experiment was an engine at idle with a resonator, then when you pinch the tube feeding the volume (that tagged on the side of the inlet so not restricting to flow) the engine cuts out.

Thoughts are that the resonance frequency helps stack the air molecules neatly so it is denser when entering the carburettor. Think of a bucket of gravel and sand mixed up put onto a vibration plate with a high frequency, it sorts them out neatly. If the frequency with lower they would jump about and have space in between.
Do you have any thoughts on this?

can you do this by attaching a piezoelectric trasnducer to the base of the bottle?

Hello, I have a question: how is the formula, when I search the volume (V) ? I have the frequency 131, 41Hz. The neck opening A(square 3.6cm x 10.5cm) and L is 4cm.

Thank you Professor !
I have a question. Where should I look to find information about design a Helmholtz resonator to improve the performance of a two stroke engine?
I found some articles about 4 stroke engines beeing improved with the use of Helmholtz resonator as a air box on the air intake of the motor, and this envolve something about the opening valves timing, but in two strokes engines tere's no admission valves.
I'm trying to learn how to design a air box for a 2 stroke engine in order to improve it's Horse Power.
Thank you for your attention.
Respectfully,
Robson .

One time I was walking in the wind with my accoustic guitar on my back and I heard a noise that I thought was a car I looked around then I noticed it was coming from the guitar it's sounded like feedback from a electric guitar. I haven't been able to reproduce this.

Hi! How does it work if the resonator has holes in it, like in an ocarina. Do the holes change the pressure? I don't understand how opening the holes makes for a higher note.

Hold up,
If we can tune the volume of the resonator to make the engine louder or quieter, doesn't that mean that removing the resonator would, at least according to the math you've provided, make the least amount of noise? If so why have it at all?

A spring-mass system - That's an oscillator, not resonator.
