How to start an old two stroke boat motor after a while

We did something a little different in this video we actually focused on my 1999 wellcraft 190ccf with my 1999 Johnson 115 on it and how to start an old two stroke. I’ve learned that there’s a bit of finesse that comes into play when starting an old two stroke. And you’ll see just how to get that old Smokey two stroke to start right up!

We are now called KT DESIGNS we do a whole lot more than just trucks so we’ll be showing all minds of bad ass backyard builds on this channel!

Nothing better than the sound and smell of an older 2 smoker!

Appreciate these videos. I just acquired a 2002 20 foot CC mated to a 2002 Mercury 115 HP carburetor 2-stroke with just over 400 hours. I know the mechanic who serviced the outboard which is why I purchased the boat and motor. He assured me the outboard has been well maintained and that the outboard has years of useful life so long as I maintain the engine. Agree with others commenting on the attributes of the 2-stroke; a well maintained 2-stroke is a thing of beauty. Thanks again for the helpful guidance on getting a 2-stroke started.

Ppl can say what they want about them, but an old trusty 2 stroke still sounds so good to me

I always use a fuel stabilizer (Quicksilver), never go beyond a couple of months (Winter!) without running it, and keep check on the muffs when running as they are notorious about coming off. Love the old 2 strokes!

“Do small, half pumps until it gets nice and firm” that’s what she said 😂

I grew up running 2 stroke outboards with oldheads who used to water ski in the 70's, and my boat has a 1988 65 yamaha, just squeeze till the buld gets stiff, then do 3 more complete squeezes and she starts up first time

Nice vid. Looked it up because my Brother and I are looking at getting our Dad’s 1970 115 back up and running.

Thank man. Your technique worked for me. It's not a documented procedure for my 1999 17' Chriscraft.

Bought a 20 year 2 stroke engine. I found this extremely helpful. So to choke you are pushing the key in. Then the next time you jist tuen the key. You do this when in neutral, correct? Have lot of questions but extremely helpful.

Hows that gonna work at a dock if you forget to start it once before you leave? Keep it on trailer and start it that way? Would be about the only way to do it i figure for a cold start needing throttle applied.

I have a 99 Johnson 225. Just took it to the mechanic and he said it still has a lot of life. They don't make them like they use to.

I think these motors were the pinacle of carbed 2 strokes. They, along with the yamaha v4/v6 are some of the most reliable motors ever made. Just sharing my thoughts.

Did you start that in gear (forward)? No separate throttle lever to do it in neutral?

Never had to pump the primer bulb that much, but mine is a V4, so not as much gas is needed to fill the carbs. I also, don't normally need to advance the throttle in neutral to get it to start.

Pretty exact for me too. Johnson 115. But even after it’s warm, it tends to want the same process. Any advice?
