Also Beyoncé does all her vocal production and majority of her own background vocal stacking. Every person she’s worked with from her group members to Destiny’s Child to songwriters to producers have all praised how advanced her ear is when it comes to creating harmonies and being able to find Melodies no one else hears. Her old sound engineer DJ Swivel said she has unreleased song they worked on where she stacked over 100 vocals.

Yes!! The songs flow. I would definetely recommend listening to the album in the intented order. It’s basically a dj setlist❤

Renaissance has one of the best album flows ive ever heard in music to the point where if you arent looking, you might not even realize youre going into the next track until youre a few seconds into it. the melodies consistently amazing throughout, and every track feels different and needed from one another despite how well they mesh. im not even that big of a beyonce fan but renaissance blew me away and its easily one of my favorite records from 2022

I agree her approach is extremely technical. Even though for me personally it’s a plus, I do get that it’s not to everyone’s taste. I suppose what I hear is that each particular vocal run, while technical, has a certain charm to it, which makes this track quite rich on multiple listens. It also adds interest to the tracklist for this reason as the other songs don’t have quite this amount of showboating and have different points of focus.

Regarding the stops, compositionally I like that they break up the staticness of the groove. I interpret them as a sort of constant tease and frustration, which ties in with the desire in the lyrics.

Another thing about this track that I like is how the background vocals mellow out and elongate as the lyrics shift their focus from sex/desire to lifelong love.

First, to say that she’s only a technical vocalist would be incorrect. She has plenty of songs showcasing rawness and soul, for example: I care, Listen, Resentment, Freedom, Spirit (lion king), Otherside, Don’t hurt yourself, I’d rather go blind. Just to name a few.

Also as far as the stops in Virgos groove, I think they help keep your attention because it’s such a long song, and for the average listener it’s nice to have something to break it up

I swear this entire album sounds like Soul Train in the 70s 80s and 90s. I love it.

The hard stops it what makes it satisfying. Its to give edge. Plain and simple.

Excellent and fair assessment of one of the best songs on the record. I'm continually impressed by how you are able to structure your thoughts in real time and create a flowing analysis on the fly. Great to watch. This was a great topic for the week too, I hope you do it again.

finally a Beyoncé reaction i was looking forward to it. as always another great reaction but my highlight is definetely the part you talk about the first seconds and the vocals "ooooh yeah" that have the listener to reaaally pay attention to the song, because thats the way i felt when i listened to it in my first time and kind of my favorite bit of the song to this day

If you want to see a raw vocal performance by her, check out her Glastonbury(2011) cover of The Beautiful Ones by Prince! Pure emotion and power in that performance

Im curious to know why praising Beyoncé vocal agility and boxing it into the pop world was needed and would love to see your list of people outside the pop world who challenge her in that regard because as someone intune with both mainstream and non, she is quite literally a top tier vocal agility masterclass in both worlds.

If you want to see her do an array of technies. Watch Beyonce - Beautiful ones, Sex on Fire (live)

As someone that is a lover of and critic of Beyonce I understand completely what you're saying about her singing. However, a song that I think exemplifies what you might be looking for in terms of intense emotive power is probably don't hurt yourself from her album Lemonade. I think most of the songs from that album have that emotive quality but this song in particular reaches a fever pitch. It also has a great feature from Jack white from the white stripes. That album is significant to her discography/public persona because up until that point she presented herself as a fairly drama free glamorous woman and that album kind of shattered yet added more weight, in my opinion, to that almost superwoman anthemic quality of her art.

Certainly brought the groove that the track title promised

my recommendation would be pray you catch me- its the first track of her "almost divorce" album lemonade and quite experimental amongst her discography. blue from her self titled album is another suggestion since the theme of this song is her daughter.

I think the hard stops on the song is a response to the cohesion the song has with PLASTIC OFF THE SOFA (the previous song on the album that transitions into this song) since the whole album flows song to song, the hard stops work as a breeze of air to keep going. That's the reason this song is not meant to listen by itself. I highly recommend you to listen to PLASTIC OFF THE SOFA + VIRGO'S GROOVE.

The start stops are to give edgy disco vibe. Its too swaggy for it. She is just adding swag duh. Listen to more actual soul disco and Urban r&b... that's why it feels unnatural to your ears.
