Baja shelf is a really underrated feature that I think makes the pool

As a person that grew up with a 7 feet deep pool, that's a must in my book. Had a blast, thanks to that. That is if you like to swim.

Great pool and backyard. I agree with the umbrella holes and the play pool feature.

These are great tips! My biggest regret when we built our pool is not doing the Baja shelf. Our builder kept selling it as a “tanning ledge” and we’re already dark skinned 😂 But now I wish I had it for the reasons you stated.

Great suggestions. We included 4 out of 5 in the pool we are building right now. The one that I didn't do was his depth suggestion. We had that in the pool at our last house and we hated it. Most of the pool was too deep for the shorter 5 ft tall women and all the kids in the family. So everyone that wasn't on a float was jammed into the shallow end. On the new pool we have a large shallow section going from 3 ft to 4.5 ft, and then a quick drop off down to 5.5 ft at the far end. So I think it just depends on what you want, and the height of the people using the pool. I thought I would love the game pool design in our old house, but in 17 years of living there, we never once played volleyball. In the new pool, a large percentage of the pool around the spa and the tanning shelf (never heard the term Baja shelf here in Texas) is 4.5 ft or less for hanging out, and then one deep section at the far end for jumping in.

We totally agree that if you are looking for water sports usage, you definitely need to determine depth for usage.

I have everything you have minus the slide...that slide is amazing. We have two waterfalls and a bubblers with lights on the sun ledge.

Thanks, Ryan! You have a beautiful pool and backyard.

12" depth is the best for the Baja

We are building almost same pool minus slide, adding a Big Pavilion on the west side.

I redid my pool 3 years ago. The pool was 30 years old and the plaster was past due a remodel. The changes added were pearl plaster, new filter, new concrete deck, a cleaning line, autofill, and glass tile borders on steps. These changes were standard, but did add to the cost. I didn’t try to alter the design because they add thousands to the budget. I wanted to widen some sitting shelves, but the contractor said they cost thousands more so I passed on them. No regrets. The only regret is not adding a turtle mosaic that I saw in a tile store.

Our local pool guy said a shelf is a waste of $$.

You pay by the same per sq/ft, whether it's 6", 3 " feet, or 7 feet deep.

Hi - to obtain the 6" tan shelf for the kids, is the water 6" and the actual depth of the ledge taller? Just trying to get an idea of how deep from the coping a ledge should be so that I get a nice 6' of water for the kids :) thanks

Yeah, I like the idea of having the deep area in the middle. It would be good for volleyball. Putting the tall people up front is cancelled out by them being in deep water.

Who did your backyard? I want a similar aesthetic for mine.

❤ What a great design!!!

Who made the slide?

Can you send me the deposit and the shelf size! I agree nobody uses the deep end a everybody loves the 6 inch beach feel.

We didn't get to see the holes for the umbrella at the baja shelf. It seems they have like a plastic protection. Other than that, nice suggestions.

Helloooo from Ouray, Colorado!! This is a really awesome pool and video. Thank you very much for sharing your experiences and recommendations!!

We just finished a 2 week camping trip in Tucson. It was partly to escape our lingering Colorado winter. The other reasons were to explore the greater Tucson area and to consider it as a spot to move to. We are mid 50s and live on a 10% sloped road that is icy 6 months per year. It is also a walking town (down the 10% sloped icy road hehehe). So, we are thinking of our pending reduction in mobility.

Anyways, a pool....or putting in a pool, is on our radar!! You provided some great tips to consider. I will check out your other pool video too!

I come to Phoenix for work every month or two. Phoenix would be a secondary consideration for us, but not ruled out. Have a great day.
