New Caledonia: The Country That Refused Independence

Hello Nerds! Welcome back to my channel!

In December 2021, the archipelago region of New Caledonia held its 3rd vote for independence from France. Quite surprisingly, the overseas territory chose to remain with the French republic, with a majority voting against independence.
New Caledonia is sui-generis or a special collectivity of the French republic. This essentially means that France can control military & foreign policy, immigration, police and the currency in the overseas region, while still allowing the region to function independently.
It is located in the pacific ocean, just south of Vanuatu and around 1200 km east of Australia. It is also one of the farthest French territory with an incredible 17000 kms away from continental France in Europe.
The New Caledonian archipelago consists of the island of Grande Terre, the Loyalty islands, the Chesterfield islands, the Belep archipelago, the Isle of Pines and a few remote islets.
In 1998, France signed the Nouméa accord which promised a smooth transition of power to the local government over a period of 20 years! And so in 2018, the first independence referendum was held with an 81% turnout.
More than 56% voted against independence, and chose to remain with the French republic.
The second referendum was held in 2020, and once again independence was rejected, as more than 53% voted to stay with France.
The third and final independence referendum which was held in December 2021 saw an incredible 96.5% rejecting independence yet again. The low turnout of only 43.8%, compared to the previous years record 86% was attributed to a widespread boycott of the indigenous Kanak people that refused to vote, and had previously demanded the vote be postponed following a new outbreak of COVID 19.
The government of France officially considers the matter of new Caledonia independence resolved, but questions continue to linger over the legitimacy of the controversial 3rd referendum.
It remains to be seen if there will be an additional referendum in the coming years.
