The number of partitions going to infinity doesn't guarantee an exact answer. You can after all let the number of partitions from x=1 to x=2 go to infinity and just have one partition between 2 and 4 and naturally, not get an exact answer. You want what is called the norm to go to zero which basically means that the largest base is tending towards zero as the number of partitions go to infinity
