Equifax Data Breach: What Now

Data Breaches happen, it's almost a fact of life. No matter how well protected some servers are, there always seems to be some exploit that was attacked at the weakest link. The important thing is to turn up your guard when this happens and protect yourself with the recommended ID Theft protection measures. You can get this free from Equifax since after all, they were responsible for failing to adequately protecting your information. I have to say, it's probably not enough in terms of the potential hassle this has exposed everyone to.

The fact that top executives in equifax started to sell their stock months before they announced the breach is what angers me.

Love the playful layout of the toys. :)

Question, did you read that Equifax knew about it since i believe July? After they found out, the CEO and top executives sold over $1 million dollars in shares. Then 40 days later they finally announced it to the public that they were hacked?
Plus, when they said everyone can sign up for the TrustID security service, in fine print they put "if you sign up, you waive your right to sue us".
And after the 1 year, they will charge you for the service automatically. Don't you think most people will forget they signed up?

I wish it didn't exist. Having all that data about us in one database is asking for trouble, but I recently got my credit report free with no unusual activity. Still, with holiday season approaching, it pays to stay alert.

The original purpose of the SSN was explicitly NOT supposed to be used for identity verification. We have State driver's licenses and ID's but you're not required to have one. SSN is one thing that everyone in the US is given from when you're born so they just piggybacked it for verification purposes, which was never its original intent.

A long time ago I tried to open a bank account but I couldn't because there was a liquor store operating on my SS#. I looked and there was someone with a house loan on me too. That was a long fight.

i've read you'd waive your right to any compensation if they were going to be taken to court if you choose to check or take their 1 year of free credit checking etc. there's probably not much you can do even after finding out your info was compromised.

Just freeze your credit. That is the safest and foolproof

Jack Ma talks about Data Technology is the way to future success. These hackers most of listened to him and went after 149 million plus Valuable Data using technology? Great video BTB.

so if you had frozen your credit, it shouldn't be nearly as bad? Once this info is out there, I hear the crooks will keep that info for years to come. How long is Equifax going to be responsible for this I wonder.

BTB QUESTION: How do you feel about sharing mobile devices and computers in terms of safety share? I don't. Some teens have been known to steal from their parents and are often more computer savvy. Also, people who still write checks should use the Pilot G2, unwashable ink. I haven't used checks for nearly 20 years. Anyway, think about doing more $$ safety stuff: spotting a con, etc. With holidays approaching, the cons come out in force, especially related to charity. US companies are allowed to keep a lions share of contributions. If I can help, I'll give directly to a family or only a local charity.

What do you think about the Equifax Chief of Security being a music major. I think the IT industry is abused and full of nepotism where people who have no IT/Engineering/Math background are given high ranking positions.

BeatTheBush, very informative video back in September, but where does everything stand now that it's January 2018? Thanks.

Can you believe that once one of the servers I manage was also hacked! I'm still not sure how they did it but my best guess is that they exploited a security issue in ProFTPd's mod_copy to upload a file into a joomla site and then they used it to send out around 10000 spam emails until I stopped them. So what can you do... that's life. I moved all joomla sites to a dedicated server (that cannot send emails) and I disabled mod_copy on every server. I guess it would have been my job to know mod_copy had an issue but I was relying on the Ubuntu Security Notices and they didn't report anything... So, it's not easy...
But others in this comment section say that Equifax employees didn't even change the default password, that's really shameful, especially when you are managing such sensitive information, they should commit harakiri or something.

did this happen by the higher ups or was this done by professional hackers? looking at somebody elses video in the comment section some people said it was an insider who hacked into our accounts. I called Discover last night they gave me the phone number to Equifax called them went over to 2017 security checked the box that says i'm not a robot. found out nothing of mine was stolen No information was stolen from my credit report..

but curious was this done by Equifax clerk, higher up or a professional hacker?

When you sign up for trustedid premier thru the equifax website, they ask for your full 9 digit ssn #, correct? You only provide the last 6 digits to see if you were affected, but get prompted to provide all 9 digits to sign up for trustedid premier....please confirm. Thanks!

I've been hoping you would post a video on this

Do you recommend freezing your credit? Everything I have read recommends to freeze your credit, but then technically it never safe to un freeze it. So whats the point?
