"Violet Hill" aus dem Album "Viva la Vida"
Lyrics:
Was a long and dark December From the rooftops I remember There was snow White snow
Clearly I remember From the windows they were watching While we froze down below
When the future's architectured By a carnival of idiots on show You'd better lie low
If you love me Won't you let me know?
Was a long and dark December When the banks became cathedrals And a fox became God
Priests clutched onto bibles Hollowed out to fit their rifles And the cross was held aloft
Bury me in honor When I'm dead and hit the ground A love back home it unfolds
If you love me Won't you let me know?
I don't want to be a soldier Who the captain of some sinking ship Would stow, far below
So if you love me Why'd you let me go?
I took my love down to violet hill There we sat in snow All that time she was silent still
So if you love me Won't you let me know?

I'm coming back to this song after not hearing it for years, and I'm realizing that 14 year old me had EXCELLENT taste.

Woke up with this song in my head randomly. I haven't listened to it in years, loved it as a teen. That last verse still pulls at my heart

I was 16 years old when I last heard this song on mainstream TV. I was "coming up" on ecstacy and about to head out into the weekend summer night to sit in a field with 2 dozen people to enjoy what would be the last weekend of our teenage youth. This played on the MTV channel while we came up on double dropped tablets of ecstacy, speckled shamrocks. All the other weekends after it would be alcohol fuelled and hard to remember or simply not worth remembering at all. But this weekend was going to be different. Every song played on mobile phones would not yet be plagued with touch screens or social media apps. Every conversation would be remembered with a fondness of actual sincerety as we walked in the warm midnight breeze of the year 2008 in Ireland towards a field with a dilapidated farm shed and 2 dozen other teens on a weekend tearup.

"I took my love down to violet hill, there we sat in snow. All that time, she was silent still." I know this line hits hardest for anyone who grew up in the late 00s because I came to realise "my love" is actually the past and not an actual person. "She was silent still" is her memories sitting there reminding me of what I can't change or interact with anymore. I'm only 30 and I am only now understanding why nostalgia is such a powerful force. It's like a ghost that constantly taps on your shoulder but when you turn around to acknowledge it, it's no longer there.

Was a long and dark December
From the rooftops I remember
There was snow
White snow

Clearly I remember
From the windows they were watching
While we froze down below

When the future's architecture
By a carnival of idiots on show
You'd better lie low

If you love me
Won't you let me know?

Was a long and dark December
When the banks became cathedrals
And the fog
Became God

Priests clutched onto bibles
Hollowed out to fit their rifles
And the cross was held aloft

Bury me in armor
When I'm dead and hit the ground
My nerves are poles that unfroze

If you love me
Won't you let me know?

I don't want to be a soldier
Who the captain of some sinking ship
Would stow
Far below

So if you love me
Why'd you let me go?

I took my love down to violet hill
There we sat in snow
All the time she was silent and still

So if you love me
Won't you let me know?

If you love me
Won't you let me know?💛🏌️‍♂️💯🇲🇽

That ending! So somber and melancholic. I want it to be a full song!

If you ask me, this was the last great Coldplay song, when they had still had that edge with lots of genuine soul

I'm probably the furthest thing away from a Coldplay fan, but goddamn this song makes me feel so conflicted about that.

The lyrics hit harder now than they ever did.

Used to listen to this song on my iPod driving the mrap back to the motor pool on cob Speicher Iraq..After having told our 21 year old blonde female medic that I loved her... And I was completely head over heels.
