The thing I like about this game is that despite the classes you can still play how ever you want you can grab a knight and make him wield kitanas or make a magic person into a knight that happens to know magic

So starting class for melee has to be Samurai. Having a bleed weapon is so so good early game. Many bosses are weak to bleed. Plus you start with a bow and decent armor. Just overall an early game powerhouse.

As someone that is always drawn to mages, the Astrologer class really fits my playstyle like a glove. I've tried being a magic knight or any combination of magic and melee but I find myself going back to pure magic. Astrologer gave me everything I wanted and more!

only thing I would change is that confessor needs to be higher up on the list

As a Confessor player, I’m very offended by this video. It started at level 10 and I mastered it perfectly

Confessor is definitely #1, you can make faith/strength build very easily and be powerful, beginning is hard as hell but after finding better armor and sword/seal and spending some points in attributes you want you should already sit in good spot

you forgot that the bandit starts with a shield with a unique Ash of War thats only available for that shield, it's a parry move but it's faster than a regular parry skill, useful for those who love to parry, also my fav is the samurai

I did my first run as Samurai with dual katana and it was fun altho it feels always under leveled until almost end game (which maybe not entirely a bad thing). I think I'm gonna do my second run wholly as a standard bandit dagger and bow only.

Great list!!

I used the prisoner class. This is one of the things I love most about this game. I always wanted to build a true battle mage, one where both melee and magic were viable. Skyrim didn’t do it for me as melee always felt way more powerful and magic seemed like a side note even when you get the master spells (the charge time on those things is ridiculous). The Witcher 3 was great but again the magic is a side character to Geralt’s swords. Elden ring allowed me to build my perfect battle mage who can stand on the outside and obliterate you with sorceries, or go hard on the inside with melee and slice you to ribbons and instantly switch between the two as needed. Love this game.

this video is total bullshit. after several hundreds of hours starting class goes as follows.

1. vagabond (str or dex) | hero (str or arcane/bleed) | astrologer (int) | prophet (faith)
2. samurai (pure dex or dex/int) | prisoner (int or hybrid) | confessor (melee hybrid or faith)
3. bandit (weaker arcane than hero) | wretch (10-10)

To clarify samurai is still the best class but only for speed runs and not for the average player who levels up till at least 15 before he runs into stormveil.
The list I wrote down above is focused on starting character class roles, like caster, melee or status effects. They have the best preset stats early for any specific role. Later beyond sl200 starting class doesn't matter nearly as much.

The only issue is this is a game type where starting class is only relevant in the very beginning. You can spec however you want as you gain levels and by the end be playing something completely different than what you started as. I started as a samurai and while I used that style of combat throughout the majority of the game I would change my setup frequently in late game to make different bosses easier or traversal different. By the end I resembled a sorcerer more than a samurai

Its my First Souls-Like and i started instant as a WRETCH because i wanted to have a challenge. I realy have to say at first it was hard as a wretch but i like souls games very much and exploring in elden ring and its beauty, the boss fights are so nice and the gameplay and story are just amazing. Im on my first run and short before the house vulcan im 45 hours in and im looking forward to become ELDEN LORD and after that starting my NG+ run

Astrologer class for me but I've become a spell sword towards the end game, I'm using the Moonveil.

I thin prisoner should be higher as he can use his magic to back him up while he gets up close and attacks. Some enemies even get slightly staggered by it.

I started with samurai and loved it, especially when I got the second uchigatana

Samurai class is my favorite because of how good the starting katana is and it fits my playstyle well

I went with the Confessor class because I want to make a paladin build of my character. The shield will only be good in the early to mid game as you will get offensive incantations mid to end game. I have to respec my charatcter since I focused on my Dex rather than Faith. In the end, I should have went with the Vagabond or Samurai but I just worked with what I have.

I always do wrech-like classes on my first playthrough for that sweet sweet quality build. Going for a frost mage build on my current playthrough.
