Dont think they were ment for hunters or hikers. Most likely they were ment to flatten tires of off road atv and motor cycles. These environmental wackos do this at desert motorcycle races and riding areas.

Thank you Kirk. The Cleveland National Forest was called and they were very responsive. They took custody of the booby traps for evidence and are investigating. Who ever place those traps is or are (if more than one involved) wrong for what they did. You what is funny? If this was overseas, this could be construed as an act of terrorism (booby traps placed to indiscriminately hurt people). Crazy, right?

Good Job for pointing this out.  Hope your son is ok.

Good job on clearing that. Goes to show you that you have to be vigilant at all times in the woods. Especially in national parks where you can be multiple miles from help.

Thank you for sharing man I really appreciate that. It might have been to keep people away from a Gorilla Grow, or just somebody who's downright sadistic those were well fashioned booby-traps I was not expecting that

This is really sad that some body would take the time to do something like this. I feel it is important to talk to your fellow man out on these trails to get a feel of what people are up to out in the Cleveland nation forest most everybody hiking, mountain biking, dual sporting, and hunting are just enjoying the freedom of the area. But there are also the ones that just look out of place and those are the ones we should stop and check out. Just my opinion, I love to get away out in the back country of corona I hike and dual sport it often with my wife and kids lets all do our part and communicate with one another. Together we can find this person.

one explanation for missing hikers serial killer stalking people on a trail if that would have been a lone hiker it would really disable that person ..

Obviously no excuse for this. I am wondering if these were intended more for off-road vehicles (with no consideration given to hikers). I say this because there are much, much nastier ways (Viet Cong-type) to attack a person on foot, and that would only be found after it's stepped on. I don't argue that these could very well be intended to injure people, put out by useless scum . Ooutstanding effort on your part; I only came across this after Googling Kessler Flat.

My friend Greg on flickr just alerted me to this since I've been doing some hikes around that area the last couple of months.  As a hiker and a mountain biker,   hunting season can be a bit nerve wracking, but I find this kind of thing appalling and inexcusable.  Any person, man, woman or child, or any animal could step or fall onto these things. Did the CNF people suggest what to do if you find more of these?  Thanks for cleaning these up - I'll be looking more closely where I step from now on....

Wow good work. Buy good gear and you should have to worry about a nail.

I would hate to think that a hunter did that to keep other hunter away... Sure does seem that way.. Public Land is open for everyone to hunt.

Realizing this was in 2013. But did you ever turn these into the Rangers? They could’ve been backer boards for posting signs. Likelihood that all of them landed with nails up is unlikely, however if they all weren’t nail up, they may have been old ass backer boards that the forest rangers or others nail onto trees & used to put up posters/signs etc without having to staple or nail a ton stuff onto trees. This way it’s one board, one nail, hammer on, hang signs or staple signs onto board vs tree.
