Can Surfing Survive Climate Change? (feat. Maiya May) | America Outdoors: Understory | PBS

Experts estimate that almost all coral reefs could be gone by 2050, and the more we lose, the closer we get to a climate tipping point - a threshold that leads to dramatic and often irreversible changes in our environment. But according to the surfing scientists in Hawaii, not all hope is lost yet.

Baratunde Thurston meets Cliff Kapono, a Native Hawaiian who is using both science and surfing - or rather, his surfer’s understanding of the ocean - to protect coral reefs around the world. Cliff also discusses how surfing, coral reef restoration, and science are all intertwined and woven into his identity as a Native Hawaiian.

Want to learn about other climate tipping points? Maiya May and our friends at Weathered on @pbsterra have you covered.

America Outdoors: Understory is a six-part YouTube series inspired by the PBS broadcast series America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston.

I came from Fate and Fabled. I remember being in college with Thurston, but never really met him. He does great work, and this was a very informative and interesting piece of science and am important warning.

Just referred by PBS Space Time. As always a great reference confirmed. Good luck with the mapping. Complex systems are like understanding wave function (subatomic speaking)

Baratunde, I am so thrilled to see you hosting a show on one of my favorite outlets. Ever since code switch stopped putting out new episodes, I intended to look up whatever it is that you were doing next, but you know how that goes. I haven’t even checked if code switch ever started up again. Anyway, I heard your name at the end of another video, recommending that we check out the program and got so excited! I think you’re just brilliant :)

PBS Weathered, Terra. Makes my climate anxiety far worse! But I'd rather know what's ahead than blindly wait.

Coral reefs can be read like tree rings and mud cores. Corals are indisputably important.
