Microphone Monday: NYC Compression Trick (NYC Drum Trick)
.
.
.
Before we get started, let’s learn about NYC Compression Trick.
The NYC compression trick (NYC Drum Trick); was first coined by the legendary audio engineer Bobby Owsinski in his 1999 Mixing Engineer’s Handbook. This technique was something a lot of New York Mixing engineers were using at the time.
The NYC Compression trick is simply parallel compressing with an EQ and bass send.
FYI: Parallel compressing takes a track that you duplicate or send to an additional bus using an auxiliary send. This act provides you with two versions of that track. You add a compressor on the duplicate and compress aggressively. Then fade in the compressed double to taste, and now you have a more beefy and punchier sound.
Step by step:
1. route channels to buss
2. Add compressor to buss
3. Aggressively compress with a ratio of 8:1 to 12:1, or more.
4. Apply a fast attack & decently slow release
5. Set threshold to around 10db for gain reduction
6. Add make-up gain to compensate
7. Add EQ after the compressor
8. Add a low shelf around 100 Hz and boost that around 3 dB.
9. Add a high shelf around 10 kHz and boost that around 3 dB.
10. Listen to the track and fade in the NYC buss fader until you’ve fattened the track to your taste.
What did you guys think? Have you ever tried this compression trick before? If so, did you like it? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
Okay. Byeeeee. 🥁🤓❤️✌🏻
