Would hoplites really use their normal spears in a 1v1 duel? Thought the spears were designed to function in the phalanx only and for most other things they’d use the short sword instead

I would only say there is a BIG difference between touching somebody with a weapon and an actual hit that would cause death in a real area. You might lunge and lightly tap your opponent’s leg armour and say “haha I cut your leg off” where as in reality while you are taping my armour I’m delivering a clear blow that would kill or incapacitate at that velocity but the fake weaponry is what is preventing that.

There are more effective weapons and armour to fight in single combat, a hoplite is as strong as the man next to him.

This just isn’t accurate. There is no way the guy representing the spartan is on that level. Now if you tell me he is military special forces and has been training exclusively in this fighting form I would say this would be close.
