The pinna is nearly always incorrectly described as an instrument for collecting sound and transferring it to the inner ear (as you describe here, from educational books no doubt, or lectures). The pinna is a binaural infusing device that gives sounds a particular tone depending on the angle in which it hits the pinna, giving us the ability to distinguish what is above, below, behind and in front of us, and very importantly, heard externally, as without the pinna, and if we simply had holes in the sides of our heads, we would hear things internally, inside our head, this is the fundamental reason for the pinna, and, is the only organ that you can see how it actually works, once the principle of sound physics is understood.
