Our Word Up series takes a word and breaks it down, so you know how to use it! We cover gaming words like nerf, buff, and what it means to be OP. We talk about movies and video games, defining words like revisionist history, retconning, and continuity. Give us suggestions for words that you don't understand!

IAYTD is your one-stop shop for all things comics, movies, television, and more. If you're curious about fandoms like Game of Thrones or the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I can help with my regular What Is videos that summarize a hobby or interest in just a few minutes! very well explained. An example of trope that I'll use the interrupted kiss trope. a lot of times the first kiss will be interrupted so much that when it happens you can't believe you didn't predict it happening.

The villain that finally corners the hero and instead of killing him right then and there, goes into a monologue about their plan..extra points if they're British (because evil masterminds only come from the UK for some reason)

A trope is NOT always a cliche. Another definition is "a significant or recurrent theme" or "motif".

The word 'impactful' (instead of effective) is a trope of modern corporate lingo.

In horror movies the person runs up the stairs instead of out the door.. Although that didn't work in Scream. 😅

The hero (male or female) who's always a great fighter. MacGyver was the last hero who used his brain.

I don't know if this is exactly a trope per se, but in movies when someone with a gun pointed at them by a hostile person is about to be shot, they seem to inevitably say the same exact words: "You don't have to do this" and somehow, those words seem to trigger an immediate shooting murder scene as if on cue.

A trope isn't the same as a cliche. I trope would be: I'm explaining something wearing a college logo on my clothes so you you know I have education and authority. The rainy funeral is a cliche.

Huh, I always thought tropes were the positive version of cliches
